Some people thought that the NFL season could be in jeopardy after New England Patriots starting quarterbackCam Newton tested positive for coronavirus ahead of their Week 4 game vs. the Kansas City Chiefs.
The league had to reschedule and reshape the calendar following multiple Covid-19 outbreaks in the past couple of weeks and now that it seems like weâre slowly going back to normalcy, there are still doubts regarding Newtonâs availability going forward.
However, his coach Bill Belichick was less than clear when talking about Newtonâs status for this upcoming weekendâs clash vs. the Denver Broncos, which shouldnât be a surprise given how heâs often dealt with these kinds of situations.
Bill Belichick Gives Not-So-Clear Update On Cam Newtonâs Status For Sunday
So, when the media asked whether the former NFL MVP would be under center when they travel to Mile High on Sunday, Belichick beat around the bush in the finest Bill Belichick fashion:
âWhatever the league protocol is, it is. Howâs he doing physically? Any player that would come back to the team off the COVID (list) would have to go through medical clearance. (âŠ) Weâll see how that goes,â Belichick told WEEI.
Obviously, this doesnât actually say anything at all, and weâve already learned that the virus can take a toll on an athleteâs ability to perform at the highest level, let alone after a couple of weeks without being able to practice.
Newton was playing at an MVP level through the first three games of the season, throwing for 714 yards with a couple of scores and 2 interceptionsand rushing for 149 yards with 4 touchdowns.
As for the Patriots, theyâre currently sitting at a 2-2 record and have been an elite defensive team once again. Hopefully, Cam will be able to come back at full strength and resume his revenge season.
