The New York Giants general manager was clear about whether the franchise will attempt to select a quarterback in the NFL Draft or if it will settle for Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston.

The New York Giants want to change their image after a disappointing performance in the 2024 NFL season. The Big Apple team has revamped its roster with the additions of Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, who will compete for the starting job. At the same time, the Draft is approaching, and the franchise’s front office delivered a clear message about the possibility of selecting a quarterback.

Wilson signed a one-year deal worth up to $21 million, with $10.5 million guaranteed. After spending the 2024 season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he posted a 6-5 record as a starter, the 36-year-old veteran is aiming to lead New York’s offense and get back into Super Bowl contention.

Winston, meanwhile, agreed to a two-year, $8 million deal with the Giants after spending time with the Cleveland Browns, where he appeared in 12 games and started seven. Both his arrival and Wilson’s add depth to a position left vacant following Daniel Jones’ departure. However, it seems necessary to clarify once again what New York’s plan is for the upcoming NFL Draft.

Giants’ GM’s message on signing a QB in the draft

“With the signing of those two players, we put ourselves in a position where I don’t think that’s mandatory. We’re happy with the makeup of the room right now,” General Manager Joe Schoen said in an interview with Sports Illustrated.

With the additions of Wilson and Winston, the Giants will not pursue a quarterback in the draft. It’s a significant decision, especially considering that the New York franchise holds the third overall pick in the first round.

Who will the Giants select in the draft?

Finishing the season with a 3–14 record was far from enjoyable, but it did secure one of the top picks in the draft — which makes identifying the team’s biggest needs essential. With the quarterback option ruled out, the Giants are likely to target a defensive player, and one potential name is Penn State’s Abdul Carter, who has already met with head coach Brian Daboll.
