There are several different reasons for a team to have a bad season. In the case of the San Francisco 49ers, the 2024 NFL season was a disappointing campaign in which they did not even make the playoffs. Quarterback Brock Purdy gave one reason for this outcome.
A 6-11 record left the 49ers in fourth place in the NFC West, with no chance of fulfilling the expectations raised after the 2023 NFL season, when Purdy’s team reached the Super Bowl and lost to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Among the many variables, head coach Kyle Shanahan’s team has suffered several significant injuries, including Purdy’s own. In addition, the absences of Christian McCaffrey, Jordan Mason, Dre Greenlaw, and others have had a negative impact.
Purdy explained reasons for 49ers’ disappointing 2024 NFL season
“Last year, man, guys were tired. That season is no joke, and when you go from July of training and everything, all the way to the end of February, and then you really get five weeks off or so until you’ve got to report back, and then you’re going again, guys are tired. They’re still beat up, their bodies,” Purdy explained in an interview with the Built 4 More podcast, via 49ers WebZone.

According to the 49ers quarterback, fatigue was a reason that negatively impacted San Francisco last season. Shanahan’s team has had hectic years lately, reaching at least the conference championship in three consecutive seasons from 2021 to 2023.

The 49ers quarterback revealed the team’s goal for the upcoming season. “It’s like, how can we take this group of guys every year, who don’t know each other, and you’ve got to find a way to love each other, and then go accomplish the thing? And so, being a quarterback and doing that is, to me, what it’s all about. I love that,” Purdy said.
