49ers QB Brock Purdy reveals his biggest challenge ahead of 2025 NFL season

Looking ahead to the next NFL season, Brock Purdy knows he'll need to double down on his efforts to improve upon last year's campaign for the San Francisco 49ers.

After a disappointing campaign last NFL season in the NFC West, the San Francisco 49ers will look to turn the page and make another run at the Super Bowl. Of course, to do so, they’ll need to build a competitive roster, once again with the young but experienced Brock Purdy at the helm.

The constant changes within Kyle Shanahan‘s team can often present a significant challenge for whoever takes on the quarterback role. Purdy knows that while all this turnover with new names can be counterproductive, he must rise to the occasion and make the most of the situation.

“It’s like, how can we take this group of guys every year, who don’t know each other, and you’ve got to find a way to love each other, and then go accomplish the thing?” Purdy said to the press via 49ers WebZone. “And so, being a quarterback and doing that is, to me, what it’s all about. I love that.”

The departure of key players like Deebo Samuel, along with a notably quiet free agency period so far, lends some credibility to Purdy’s remarks. Looking ahead, he will likely need to build new connections in the short term, in order to form a strong team and remain competitive in the upcoming NFL season.

A journey from the bottom for Purdy

Brock Purdy’s journey, from his humble beginnings to reaching the pinnacle by playing in none other than a Super Bowl, is a story he himself has described as one of overcoming adversity. He was always viewed with skepticism and rarely had the opportunity to be the top choice.

“My whole story has been just being overlooked, not good enough,” the 49ers QB stated, also via 49ers WebZone. “And for me, deep down inside, I’m like, I know I can play and compete at this level, this level, this level. And so, high school, it was the case. And then I became a starter, and we went to the state championship, all that. But I got recruited very late.

“And then all of a sudden I barely get an offer at the end, and I go to Iowa State. And then I was the third-string guy going into that — overlooked. And then I became the starter halfway through that season, and then for four more years.

“And then I got drafted last. So, all these people tell me that you’re not going to be good enough, but deep down inside, this whole time, I’m like, just wait until I get an opportunity to compete.”
