The first signs of activity are starting to emerge at the Miami Dolphins’ facilities, as head coach Mike McDaniel begins to lay the groundwork for a new NFL season. Once again, Tua Tagovailoa will be tasked with leading the offense on the field, and the HC is intent on keeping one of his quarterback’s primary weapons in place for the upcoming campaign.
Jonnu Smith is viewed very positively by the coaching staff, making his presence for the 2025 season something the team hopes to secure. However, as he continues to work through his contract situation, the tight end was notably absent from recent OTAs.
Mike McDaniel has been one of the main advocates for keeping the former Falcons and Patriots player on the roster, something he made very clear in recent statements to the media.
“I haven’t considered anything other than I want Jonnu on the team,” the head coach told reporters. “I think he wants to be here.”

Jonnu Smith #9 of the Miami Dolphins is tackled by Ashtyn Davis #21 of the New York Jets in the first quarter at MetLife Stadium on January 05, 2025 in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
“My experience with business is you let that play out, and in that time Jonnu is depending on me to focus on the players that I have the ability to coach and influence,” McDaniel also added.

An offense full of promise
The Miami Dolphins are shaping up to have one of the most promising offenses in the league, led by quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. With a solid grasp of the playbook and growing command in the huddle, the QB is expected to take another step forward this season.
A key focus for the team is retaining tight end Jonnu Smith, who has earned the trust of the coaching staff and is seen as a valuable asset in both the passing and blocking game. His presence would add depth and versatility to Miami’s offensive schemes.
At wide receiver, the Dolphins are betting on a breakout year from Tyreek Hill, whose explosive speed can change the course of any game. Alongside him, Jaylen Waddle continues to gain confidence as a reliable target, bringing balance and big-play potential to the unit.
