The Detroit Lions have reached an agreement with an offensive guard selected in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft, adding depth to head coach Dan Campbell’s roster ahead of the start of training camp. The player could become a valuable asset for quarterback Jared Goff.

Signing a rookie represents a key step for the team led by Dan Campbell. The Lions are in the midst of a restructuring phase, especially following the surprising departure of veteran Frank Ragnow and several notable changes to the coaching staff.

Goff will face the challenge of replicating last season’s success, when Detroit was the top team in the regular season. To do that, all the new and returning players will be crucial in surrounding him with strong tactical options once the competition begins.

Who is the rookie joining the Lions?

The Lions have signed guard Tate Ratledge, selected in the 2025 Draft. Standing 6-foot-6 and weighing 308 pounds, Ratledge was taken with the 57th overall pick after Detroit made a trade in the second round. His addition could prove valuable given his upside.

Ratledge arrives with strong credentials from Georgia, where he earned All-American honors. The Lions are also expected to evaluate him at center — a position left vacant after Ragnow’s retirement. The rookie will now compete for a starting spot on the offensive line.

How can his arrival help Goff?

As an offensive guard, his main role will be to protect Goff and open up running lanes, both critical for the quarterback to have time and stability in the pocket. If Ratledge adjusts quickly to the NFL and performs at the level he showed at Georgia, he could become a key piece of Detroit’s offensive line.
