The NFL offseason has an intriguing storyline when it comes to the future of linebacker Micah Parsons with the Dallas Cowboys. Owner Jerry Jones‘ team is undergoing a rebuild after a disappointing season and has Brian Schottenheimer as its new head coach, who has provided a new update on the continuity of one of his most important players.

Negotiations between Parsons, Jones and the Cowboys have been a long time coming. The 25-year-old has said on more than one occasion that he wants to stay with America’s Team, but talks have stalled in recent weeks.

Jones has expressed interest in extending Parsons’ contract, and formal talks are expected to begin during the NFL Scouting Combine. However, new head coach Schottenheimer went a step further and revealed a little more information about the status of the negotiations.

Key update on Parsons’ negotiations with Cowboys

“The business of the NFL has become so big and again (negotiating with Parsons) it’s a two-way street. There’s negotiations and sometimes those negotiations take time, so it’s our job to focus on the guys that are there,” Schottenheimer said in an interview with Jori Epstein of Yahoo Sports.

“We’re always going to start with our guys. We know them, right? We’ve got history with them. We’ve developed those guys. We understand their strengths, their weaknesses, what they bring to the table from a culture standpoint. So, again, it all depends on how things go. It’s a very competitive business. It’s a very competitive time of year,” he explained.

Parsons is still waiting for his long-awaited second contract with Dallas. The Cowboys, for their part, would be wise to expedite the deal if they want to create salary cap space that can be used at the start of free agency. Schottenheimer’s statement suggests that both sides need to work together to reach a beneficial deal. The 25-year-old linebacker is under contract through the 2025 season after the Cowboys exercised the fifth-year option on his rookie contract in March 2024.
