Before settling on Aaron Rodgers, Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers explored other high-profile quarterback options, including a former Super Bowl champion.

Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers tried to sign Matthew Stafford before chasing Aaron Rodgers. In fact, according to a report from Adam Schefter, Justin Fields was their second option ahead of the former Packers player.

ā€œThe Steelers were in on Matthew Stafford and didn’t get a deal done. Matthew Stafford opted to go back to Los Angeles. The Steelers were in on Justin Fields, who opted to take the opportunity to return to New York. And they’ve been in on Aaron Rodgers all along. So, Stafford, Justin Fields, Rodgers, they’ve been in on quarterbacks, but they just haven’t gotten the deal done anywhere with any of them at this point in time.ā€

Russell Wilson was never in the Steelers’ plans for a potential return, and at the moment, their only alternative is Rodgers as they look to compete for the Super Bowl since the free agency options have dried up.

Who will be Steelers starting quarterback?

Aaron Rodgers is the preferred starting quarterback for the Steelers and Mike Tomlin, but if that option doesn’t materialize, Mason Rudolph would currently hold the top spot on the depth chart.

Outside the building, the options are very limited, though they come with plenty of experience, like Joe Flacco or Carson Wentz. For that reason, many experts believe they will aggressively target the draft in 2025 or 2026.
