Mike Tomlin is taking a big risk with his decision to wait for Aaron Rodgers. According to a report by Mark Kaboly, the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers would be the one held most responsible if the gamble ends up being a failure.
“The idea was Mike Tomlin’s and the idea of waiting is Mike Tomlin’s. That would lead you to believe if it fails, it’s Mike Tomlin. Art Rooney steps in when he feels he needs to step in. Not personnel things. Where do you find a quarterback? Where they find themselves now, they’re going to have to get lucky. If it’s Will Howard, I don’t think so. They have to get lucky on something like that.”
Since the retirement of Ben Roethlisberger, who won the Super Bowl twice, Tomlin has not found the franchise quarterback of the future. During that transition, Rodgers is the man he wants to pursue a championship in 2025 and then look for a rookie in 2026 through the draft.
Will Mike Tomlin be fired by Steelers?
No. Mike Tomlin will not be fired by the Steelers, as Art Rooney seems satisfied with the head coach’s work. Despite not having won a playoff game since the 2016 season, the team has historically valued stability.
However, mortgaging the franchise’s future on a long wait for Rodgers has not sat well among fans, and that could put some pressure on Tomlin heading into the final stretch of his contract, which ends in 2027.
