Aaron Rodgers has yet to tell Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers whether he intends to play for them in the 2025 NFL season. In the meantime, his silence continues to leave the Minnesota Vikings and the New Orleans Saints as possible destinations for the 41-year-old.
However, it appears that the veteran quarterback may have set his sights on another team, one that wasn’t mentioned before. According to Colin Cowherd of FOX Sports, Rodgers would be interested in the San Francisco 49ers.
“I told you, Aaron Rodgers doesn’t buy Pittsburgh, it’s fool’s gold,” Cowherd said on The Herd With Colin Cowherd, via Sports Illustrated. “Defensive coach, two needy receivers, bad o-line, lost Najee Harris. And here we are. Aaron Rodgers is just waiting it out. I think it’s the right move. I believe he wants to go to San Francisco if the [Brock] Purdy contract doesn’t work, or Minnesota. I think he’s right to want that. I don’t think he should sign with Pittsburgh.”
Cowherd claims that the situation in Pittsburgh isn’t the best for Rodgers, which is why the quarterback is taking so long to make a decision. In his opinion, the four-time NFL MVP wants to see if an opportunity to play in the Bay area shows up.

Aaron Rodgers warms up before taking on the San Francisco 49ers at Levi’s Stadium on September 09, 2024 in Santa Clara, California.
Rodgers is also believed to be thrilled about the Vikings, but that’s not something new. The Saints recently emerged as another possibility due to Derek Carr’s injury. Instead, this is the first time the 49ers are related to A-Rod this offseason. As surprising as it sounds, it still seems unlikely.

The 49ers may not be a realistic landing spot for Rodgers
While it is true that the Niners have yet to reach an agreement on a contract extension with Brock Purdy, it only looks like a matter of time before the quarterback gets paid.
The Iowa State product may have taken a few steps back in a challenging 2024 NFL season for the 49ers, but he still won the right to get a raise. Purdy is entering the final year of his rookie deal, one of the lowest in the league as he entered the NFL as the final pick of the 2022 Draft.
Purdy has come a long way since being “Mr. Irrelevant,” having led the Niners to an NFC Championship Game as a rookie before making all the way to the Super Bowl in the 2023 season.
Unlike Rodgers, Purdy could make the 49ers forget about the quarterback position for a long time. At 25, Brock still has his entire career ahead of him, whereas A-Rod is getting closer to retirement.
Tomlin, Steelers explore options amid Rodgers’ silence
Even though they’ve been patient and looked confident about getting Rodgers, Tomlin and the Steelers are increasing their list of quarterback candidates ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft.

Pittsburgh has already had Jaxson Dart, Tyler Shough, Shedeur Sanders, and Kyle McCord for pre-drafts visit as it prepares to select with the 21st overall pick next week. And while the idea is to have Rodgers leading the QB room, Tomlin already counts on Mason Rudolph as an experienced player at the position. Only time will tell how this situation unfolds.
