Aaron Rodgers remains at the center of the NFL spotlight, and his potential arrival in Pittsburgh continues to stall as time ticks away. With the Steelers still searching for a solution at quarterback, head coach Mike Tomlin may need to hit the gas — and fast. In the meantime, he has reportedly received a compelling trade offer that includes star pass rusher T.J. Watt.
The trade idea surfaced from former NFL defensive lineman and Super Bowl champion Chris Canty, who floated a bold proposal: a straight-up swap between T.J. Watt and 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy. According to Canty, it’s a move that could benefit both franchises, and he wouldn’t be opposed to seeing the deal go through.
“Using T.J. Watt as a way to be able to pry Brock Purdy from San Francisco,” Canty said on ESPN Radio’s “UnSportsmanLike.” “The 49ers gutted at defense, being able to add some help for Fred Warner and Nick Bosa. T.J. Watt in that group. [Robert] Saleh now back there as the defensive coordinator.”
He also added: “[The 49ers] got the 11th overall pick, so they can presumably draft a quarterback if they don’t have to give up that pick in the trade. I don’t know how the 49ers say no to that.”

Brock Purdy #13 of the San Francisco 49ers is sacked by T.J. Watt #90 of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the second quarter of a game at Acrisure Stadium on September 10, 2023 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Who will lead the Steelers if Rodgers doesn’t arrive?
What once seemed like a quick decision has turned into a drawn-out saga. Weeks have gone by, and there’s still no clarity on who will take over the quarterback spot vacated by Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. Amid the uncertainty, reports suggest that head coach Mike Tomlin has started to lean toward a starting quarterback plan.

The arrival of the former Packers and Jets quarterback remains shrouded in uncertainty, leaving Mason Rudolph as the only sure thing under center in Pittsburgh for now. While several days still remain before preparations for the 2025 season officially begin, all signs point to Mike Tomlin leaning toward Rudolph as his starter — unless the Rodgers deal finally comes through.

What can we expect from the Steelers in the 2025 NFL season?
The Pittsburgh Steelers enter the 2025 season surrounded by more questions than answers. With uncertainty still looming over the quarterback position — whether Aaron Rodgers arrives or Mason Rudolph takes the reins — head coach Mike Tomlin will once again be tested in his ability to keep the team competitive through transition.
On the defensive side, Pittsburgh remains strong, anchored by elite talent like T.J. Watt, Minkah Fitzpatrick, and a deep pass rush rotation. The defense will likely continue to be the team’s identity, keeping games close and giving the offense room to grow.
Offensively, the Steelers will need to establish consistency, regardless of who’s under center. The run game, led by Najee Harris, is expected to be a focal point, while young receivers like George Pickens must step up and deliver explosive plays.
