As preparations for a new NFL season continue, many players still remain unsigned. Among them is veteran edge rusher Za’Darius Smith, one of the most coveted names in this year’s free agency. Smith himself revealed where he would like to play starting in Week 1.

The experienced defender will inevitably find a spot on a roster that meets his expectations, as he’s a player who can bring both talent and veteran leadership to any defense.

Still, it was Smith himself who, in a recent conversation with the media, stated that he would like to return to the NFC North—specifically, to play under Dan Campbell with the Detroit Lions.

“We both know where I want to be,” Smith told Tyler Dragon of USA TODAY Sports. “Hopefully I can get back to Detroit because the coaching staff and everybody in the front office are great. When I’m there, I feel like a leader and like I can influence the young guys and do great things. Hopefully, I can get back to where I want to be in Detroit.”

Going all in at the end of his career

Wherever he ends up this season, Smith knows he has one clear goal: winning the long-awaited Super Bowl. The three-time Pro Bowler has had an outstanding career, but he’s well aware that the championship ring has eluded him — and he’s determined to chase it this year.

“I’m going into Year 11. As a veteran, (a championship) is the only thing that I’m missing,” Smith said. “I did the sacks, All-Pro, Pro Bowl, so it’s really just me getting a ring now and winning a championship.”

While nothing has been finalized regarding his future, the Detroit Lions could once again be an ideal landing spot for the former Vikings and Browns standout. With Aidan Hutchinson still recovering, Detroit may be open to bringing Smith back into the fold.
