Top prospect forward targets spot on Auston Matthews’ Maple Leafs after Mitch Marner’s trade to Golden Knights

A promising young forward is set to begin the 2025-26 season with Auston Matthews‘ Toronto Maple Leafs, but whether he takes the ice in the NHL or starts in the AHL remains undecided. The player is focused on earning a roster spot amid significant lineup changes following the offseason trade of veteran Mitch Marner to the Vegas Golden Knights.

Easton Cowan, 20, made headlines last season by dominating at the junior level, leading the Ontario Hockey League playoffs in scoring and securing the Memorial Cup championship with his team. His strong offensive production and leadership qualities have put him in prime position to fill one of the forward vacancies on the Maple Leafs roster.

“I guess I know where I’ll be living this year,” Cowan said, according to NHL.com. “But having the mindset of whether you are going to play in the NHL or AHL, you just have to have that mindset of getting better each and every day.”

Opportunity to fill big shoes after Marner’s departure

The Leafs face a challenge replacing Marner, who left in a sign-and-trade deal on July 1. His departure creates a void in the top-six forward group, especially on the wing alongside stars Matthews, John Tavares, and William Nylander. The team has not yet solidified who will step into those roles, giving Cowan an opportunity to stake his claim.

Last season, Cowan earned the prestigious Red Tilson Trophy as the OHL’s most valuable player after amassing 96 points in 54 games. “I’m just worried about myself,” he added. “I have a chance to get a job, so that’s up to me to go out there and show what I can do and play my game.”

Focus on development and physical readiness

Cowan is working to increase his strength and endurance this offseason. He has prioritized rest and weight training, aiming to reach 190 pounds by the start of training camp. To avoid burnout, he opted out of on-ice sessions at the Maple Leafs’ development camp in July.

Assistant General Manager and Player Development head Dr. Hayley Wickenheiser highlighted Cowan’s growth. “He made a big jump this year,” she said. “He plays with passion and drive, and his leadership, especially in the Memorial Cup, showed real maturity.”

Championship experience could boost NHL transition

Cowan’s four-season OHL career totals include 220 points in 175 regular-season games and 96 points in 60 playoff contests. He also gained international experience with Team Canada at the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship. This busy schedule has underscored the importance of balancing physical conditioning and recovery.

Wickenheiser emphasized the mental toughness gained from championship success. “Winning is 90 percent mental,” she said. “The ability to perform consistently under pressure is what defines NHL-caliber players. This experience will serve him well in Toronto.”
