Once again, the transfer deadline hasn't failed to deliver. Shockingly, Barcelona have accepted to offload Antoine Griezmann, who will return to Atletico Madrid on loan until June 2022 with an option to buy, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Frenchman has never lived up to expectations at the Camp Nou, where he landed only two years ago in a stunning move. This season could have been his comeback year at the Cules, but it wasn't meant to be.

While the soccer community is still in shock with the news, Joan Laporta's board might consider this is a good way of reducing their wage bill and that they release a player that has never performed as expected. But the truth is that Barcelona could lose €80 million of investment on Griezmann.

Griezmann goes back to Atletico Madrid: Barcelona could lose €80 million

Fabrizio Romano reported Atletico Madrid will have a buy option of €40 million in 2022 for Griezmann. If they trigger that clause, Barcelona would be receiving €80 million less than what they spent on the France international.

In 2019, Barca acquired the Atleti sensation for a stunning €120 million that Griezmann, unfortunately, has never been able to pay back as expected on the field. So, even though the Catalans might believe they just got rid of an expensive salary, they would be also throwing away a significant amount of cash.

That explains why so many fans can't believe how this situation unfolded, as Barcelona have once again provided championship rivals with a world-class player, just like they did with Luis Suarez a year ago.

Either way, Griezmann's stint at the Cules left much to be desired and now goes back to the place where he rose to stardom. He leaves Barcelona after 102 appearances in which he scored 35 goals and provided 17 assists. In Atleti, on the other hand, he played 257 games, scoring 133 times and set up 50 goals.
