The debate over who holds the title of greatest soccer player in history continues to divide fans and experts alike. Legendary coach Carlo Ancelotti, who now leads Brazilās national team, recently weighed in when asked to choose between four icons: Lionel Messi, Diego Maradona, Pele, and Ronaldo Nazario.
The 66-year-old Italian, who has faced or coached a lot of great players over his storied career, offered a thoughtful and measured response during an interview with CONMEBOL.
āI canāt say definitively because Pele belongs to a different generation. What Pele achieved in his careerāon top of the World Cups he wonāwas something truly special,ā Ancelotti explained.
āThe others have been spectacular players. Starting with Ronaldo, whom I had the good fortune to coach, to Messi, whom Iāve seen, and all the others,ā he continued. āBut itās difficult to choose. Based on what he achieved in his career, I believe Pele deserves first placeā.

While Ancelotti didnāt provide an official ranking, his comments made it clear that Peleās legacyāhighlighted by three World Cup titles and his place among the gameās all-time top scorersāsets him apart in the GOAT conversation.

Later in the interview, Ancelotti was shown photos of himself with former Brazilian stars he coached during his time at AC Milan, including Ronaldinho and Ronaldo Nazario.
While he praised Ronaldinhoās technical brilliance, Ancelotti made it clear who he believed was on another level. āRonaldinho was spectacular because of his talent. In terms of pure talent, āRonyā was one of the greatest. But the greatest is this oneāRonaldo. In every sense, now,ā Ancelotti said. āWe had a great time together, unfortunately not for very long because he got injured, but I have very fond memories of Ronaldoā.
This isnāt the first time Ancelotti has praised Ronaldo. Upon his arrival in Brazil, the former Real Madrid manager told Globo Esporte that Ronaldo was the most talented player he had ever coached. āTechnically, he was spectacular and one of the funniest people in the world,ā Ancelotti added.
He also mentioned several other Brazilian players who left an impression on him throughout his career. āThe most professional would be Cafu. And the funniest⦠There are a lot. Eder Militao makes me laugh a lot, and Vinicius Junior as well,ā he said.
