The Gold Cup 2021 is coming to an end. Mexico and the USA clash to be crowned the regional champions. This will be their seventh final in the continental tournament and both teams want to demonstrate that they are the regional kings. 

The USMNT will try to seek revenge for the last edition’s final, in which they lost 1-0 against Mexico. They reach the final after beating Qatar 1-0 in the semifinals thanks to a late goal from Gyasi Zardes. Now, they will be looking to lift their seventh Gold Cup trophy. 

On the other hand, Mexico will try to defend their crown against a rival they know very well. They beat Canada 2-1 in the semifinals to reach another Gold Cup final. They have beat USA in five finals before and will try to make it six, especially after  losing the Concacaf Nations League against them. 

Gold Cup Final: How is the champions define in case of a tie? 

The champion of the Gold Cup 2021 will be decided in a 90 minute match. In case of a tie between Mexico and the USA, the winner will be determined by an extra-time of 15 minutes. If the tie persists, the penalty kicks will be the tiebreaker to decide the champions. 

 

Mexico and the USA have played seven finals before. However, none of them has ever ended up in a tie. USA won in the 2007 edition, with a 2-1 score thanks to goals from Landon Donovan and Benny Feilhaber. Mexico, on the other hand, won the other five finals. 

In all competitions, these two teams have played 71 matches. Mexico has won 36 times and the United States has 20 triumphs. They have drawn 15 times. Their most recent match was in the Concacaf Nations League Final, with the United States winning by a 3-2 score.
