Following their success at the Concacaf Pre Olympic tournament, Mexico arrived at Tokyo 2020 full of hope. They began their journey on the right foot by shocking France 4-1, and despite losing to Japan 2-1 on Matchday 2, they advanced thanks to a 3-0 over South Africa.

In the quarterfinals, Lozano’s team defeated South Korea in a nine-goal thriller (6-3), but its gold medal dream ended in the semis against Brazil in the penalty shootout. Now, El Tri will face a familiar foe with the bronze up for grabs.

Japan have started the Olympics impressively, winning all three group games. In the knockout phase, however, they began to struggle as they beatNew Zealand on penalties. Later, Spain beat them in the semifinals in a hard-fought game.
