Jannik Sinner reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals after his fourth-round opponent, Grigor Dimitrov, was forced to retire while leading two sets to love due to a pectoral muscle injury. However, it wasn’t a clean bill of health for the Italian either. Early in the match, Sinner suffered a fall and appeared to injure his right elbow, raising concerns about his fitness ahead of the next round.

It happened very early in the match, first game,” Sinner said afterward. “Was quite [an] unfortunate fall. Checked the videos a little bit, and it didn’t seem [like a] tough one, but I still felt it quite a lot, especially serve and forehand.”

With speculation growing over his condition, Sinner underwent an MRI scan on Tuesday morning to assess the extent of the injury. His coach, Darren Cahill, offered a brief update, telling ESPN he is “hopeful” Sinner will be able to return to the practice court later in the day, according to journalist Adam Zagoria on X.

According to Tennis365, Sinner was originally scheduled to train at 2 p.m. local time on the courts at the All England Club, but that session was cancelled. He is now expected to practice at Aorangi Park at 4 p.m. local time. Per Italian media reports, Sinner is unlikely to make the results of his MRI public until he completes that practice session and assesses how his body responds.

Sinner is scheduled to face American Ben Shelton in the quarter-finals. Shelton advanced after defeating Lorenzo Sonego in four sets. All eyes will now be on Sinner’s next move.

Shelton aims for ‘revenge’

Meanwhile, Shelton, competing in just his third Wimbledon, is aiming to reach his first semifinal at the tournament. It would mark his second career Grand Slam semifinal, having previously reached the final four at the Australian Open, where he lost to Sinner in three sets.

On the other hand, Novak Djokovic, who comes from losing in semifinals against Sinner in the French Open, will play against breakthrough star Flavio Cobolli, the 22nd seed, who defeated former US Open champion Marin Cilic.
