Much has been said about Iamaleava. Many of those can both be true. Fans across the nation still disapprove of his decision to enter the transfer portal over NIL disputes with the Volunteers. However, his time in UCLA hasn’t been entirely as bad as the Bruins’ record indicates.



Iamaleava has struggled, that’s undeniable, but he’s also been left out to dry in several occasions. More times than one, Iamaleava has been asked to play hero ball for the Bruins. As it stands, the sophomore quarterback is the entire offense in the City of Angels.

So far, Iamaleava 954 passing yards, 6 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions. Moreover, he’s rushed for 332 yards and 4 touchdowns. No other player on the roster has scored through the ground. The numbers may be good for the Long Beach-native, but they are a recipe for disaster for UCLA.

Still, the Bruins believed it was best to nip the problem in the bud before the season spiraled out of control. It might be too late for that as UCLA is 0-3 before facing a single Big Ten opponent. The college football program in Westwood faces trouble in a new front.



In the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ncaa">NCAA</a>, recruiting is almost as important to build winning programs as actually winning games on Saturdays. The Bruins know this, yet it seems they might’ve underestimated the waves their decision would make all across the country. “I am officially decomitted from UCLA, my recruitment is 100% back open,” Fruean said. Schwerzel voiced a similar comment: “Recruitment 100% back open! Continue to guide me through this process lord.”



Even teenagers in high school are aware of the drama going on in Los Angeles. It won’t be long before actual players on campus decide it might be best to enter the transfer portal and search for a new start in <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-football">college football</a>.

To say the 2025 NCAA season so far for UCLA has been disappointing and disheartening would be an understatement. With Iamaleava transferring from Tennessee, Bruins fans expected much better results from the 21-year-old signal caller and his teammates. 



Though not many fans made their way to the Rose Bowl for the recent matchup with the New Mexico Lobos, those who did walked away in utter disgust and completely let down. Still, the show must go down, even if it’s an embarrassing one to watch.

Now, there’s nothing smooth on the gridiron, as every outing is more tumultuous than the last.

With Foster out of the picture in Westwood, the Bruins may believe better days are ahead of them. However, there is an unmissable fact that could cast doubts on the future of Iamaleava and other key players on campus.

If Iamaleava does enter the NCAA transfer portal, the story would come full circle for the UCLA quarterback. It would almost be a case of live by the sword, die by the sword for the Bruins, who acquired Iamaleava via the portal and could lose him to it as well.



<h2>There’s a catch</h2>



While Iamaleava is now eligible to enter the transfer portal and search for a new home in <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-football">college football</a>, it might not be the best decision. As the 21-year-old has already transferred in the NCAA, he won’t be able to play this season. However, as he’s played in less than four games, Iamaleava can redshirt and retain a year of college eligibility.

Losing to the Dawgs in such heart-crushing fashion hurts for Heupel and the Volunteers. Tennessee has now lost nine straight games against Georgia. “Fortunately, we recruited other guys on his high school team and multiple guys throughout the years… My six years here, I’ve become good friends with Josh Giles (Dent’s high school coach) and Shannin Sharpe (former point guard at Dent’s school – now Colorado assistant coach). People that are close with Donnie, as well as his teammates here, Eric Freeny… we have many guys that have played throughout the years from Centennial High School. Once Donnie hit the portal, if we could afford him, we were probably going to get him. We already had the relationships, we’re the home school… I think probably the biggest thing he wanted to know was who else we were going to add with him. It wasn’t just about the money. He wanted to win,” he explained.

Since arriving in Los Angeles, Iamaleava hasn’t been at his best. The 0-2 start isn’t fatal, as long as the program can climb out of their hole before it’s too late.

Cronin and Co. will try to build on that performance and go further in the 2025-26 season. They have upgraded key positions during the offseason, especially the point guard position, bringing in New Mexico transfer Donovan Dent to help the squad.



NCAA analyst John Rothstein said they could be the third-best team in the Big Ten this season, behind Purdue and Michigan, and Dent is expected to play a key role in their aspirations.&nbsp;

On Saturday, Dauster dubbed Cronin’s team a potential dark horse for a Final Four run. Why? Because they added Dent to the roster.

“You have an elite point guard,” Dauster said on “The Field of 68.”&nbsp; “You have spacing bigs, you have a roster that has actually been built around having an elite point guard. I have very high expectations for what this group can be. A large part of that is I have very high expectations for how good Donovan Dent is going to be going back home to LA. We should be talking about UCLA as one of the four teams that can make a Final Four out of the Big Ten.”



After winning 23 games and adding a player who could be the second or third-best in his position nationwide at worst, the Bruins could be cooking something good.&nbsp;

One of the most talked-about moves in the latest <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-football">College Football</a> Transfer Portal involved Nico Iamaleava, who made the decision to leave the Tennessee Volunteers and join the UCLA Bruins. Unfortunately for him, his debut as the starting quarterback in the Big Ten Conference ended in a resounding loss to the Utah Utes.



In a Rose Bowl atmosphere that lived up to the occasion, DeShaun Foster’s team struggled to find answers throughout the game, ultimately falling 43–10 to the visiting team.



<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/nico-iamaleava">Iamaleava</a>, who completed 11 of his 22 passes for 136 yards, one touchdown, and one interception, spoke with the media after the game and took partial responsibility for his performance.



“We just didn’t execute well. Got to finish drives. Coach Tino put us all in the right position to go out there and execute. Me personally, I have to be better. We all got to be better as a unit,” he said via rockytopinsider.com.

Despite the loss, the QB knows there’s still time to improve: “Everything we want is still ahead of us, man. It’s week one. Our whole mindset is shifting to who our opponent is week two and going out there and dominating and executing at a high level like our coaches are putting us in position to do.”

<h2>Coach’s confidence in Nico Iamaleava</h2>



While this may not have been the debut Nico Iamaleava or the Bruins had hoped for at their home facilities, the beauty of Week 1 is that redemption is always just around the corner. Head coach DeShaun Foster believes in his starting quarterback’s talent — and trusts he’ll be able to showcase it sooner rather than later.



“Nico is a competitor. He’s not going to quit. Keeps playing hard, kept motivating the guys around him. We just have to do a better job protecting him and keeping him upright.”



He also praised his team’s attitude despite the loss: “I think the score kind of got us to be one-dimensional at one point. That was tough. I was proud of the way they came out and just kept fighting. There might have been a couple long faces on the sideline, but for the most part, most of those guys were still out there fighting and understanding what you’re putting on film now is actually who you are as a football player.”

Mick Cronin has an intriguing group of players on the UCLA roster for the 2025-26 NCAA season. The veteran coach raved about Donovan Dent, a player he thinks can take the team’s offense to new heights.&nbsp;



Dent, a transfer from New Mexico, isn’t the only player who has Cronin dreaming big about the upcoming season. Eric Dailey Jr. has turned a lot of heads within the Bruins, and Cronin has high expectations for the guard’s junior season.

The Bruins have renewed hopes for 2025-26, and Cronin is already warning opponents about what’s coming.&nbsp;He feels quite confident about his team’s chances.
