Cam Schlittler has proven he is up to the task in his first season with the New York Yankees. His 3.22 ERA after seven starts is a sign that he is on the right track, and he recently spoke about his true goal on the mound.

In a recent interview, Schlittler told reporters that for him, it doesn’t matter how perfect his outing is. The important thing is to leave the Yankees in a good position to win the game, and the longer he can stay in the game while containing opponents, the better.

“The goal isn’t to go out there and throw a perfect game,” Schlittler said. “The goal is to go out there as a starter and go six, seven, try to get to eight innings and put the team in a spot to win.

Schlittler’s Longest Game So Far

Schlittler has had only one “long” game to date, a win against the Tampa Bay Rays on August 20. He pitched a total of 6.2 innings in what was his best MLB game yet, allowing no earned runs, just one hit, and two walks.

That game against the Rays also saw Schlittler record a career-high 8 strikeouts, surpassing the 7 he had in his July 7 professional debut against the Mariners, which was also a Yankees victory.

Boone Calls Schlittler “Dominant”

Aaron Boone didn’t hold back his praise for Schlittler, calling him “dominant” and saying it was a great performance from the young pitcher. “The stuff was overwhelming; probably the best breaking ball he’s had all year, to go with the big fastball,” Boone said.
