As most NFL teams begin to shape their rosters, the Houston Texans, led by CJ Stroud, were determined not to fall behind. They secured the continuation of a key piece in their lineup by finalizing a lucrative contract extension.
All-Pro cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. has put pen to paper with the Texans, agreeing to stay with DeMeco Ryan‘s squad for at least three more seasons in exchange for $90 million. With this deal, he becomes the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history.
The news was revealed by NFL insider Adam Schefter, who, via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, shared additional details of the agreement between the former LSU player and the Texans.
“Record deal: Texans All-Pro CB Derek Stingley Jr has agreed to a three-year, $90 million extension including $89 million guaranteed. At $30M base value per year, Stingley is now the highest paid defensive back in NFL history. The CB market has been completely reset. Deal negotiated by David Mulugheta of Athletes First,” Schefter reported via @AdamSchefter.
In his latest season with the Texans, Stingley Jr. played a total of 17 games, each starting as a key contributor. Additionally, he recorded five interceptions and 54 tackles (37 solo and 17 assisted).
