After losing to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday Night Football, the Pittsburgh Steelers signed a former player of them to become the new guy to play under Mike Tomlin. While it’s a defensive player, it’s a much needed addition to the Aaron Rodgers-led team.
Asante Samuel Jr. is the new cornerback of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Samuel was a free agent but had to recover from a spinal-fusion surgery. As Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported, he will now get a chance to shine with the black-and-gold.
According to Ari Meirov, NFL insider, the Steelers are placing him in the practice squad at first. Samuel is only 26 years old and if he is able to get back into his best level, he is a great addition for Mike Tomlin‘s defense.
Asante Samuel Jr. has very good raw talent
Drafted by the Chargers in 2021, Samuel was one of the best cornerbacks in his class. During his first three years, he was a solid starter for the team. However, in 2024 he only played four games and hasn’t played since.
Samuel has allowed only 59.5% completion in his career. For the Steelers, who are very hurt in the secondary, Samuel is their last hope to be able to ammend their issues.
Steelers need good cornerbacks as they face elite QBs
Aaron Rodgers has been good this season. Still, he is not able to keep pace and trade bombs in shootouts. As the Steelers face explosive offenses like the Bengals and the Bears, they will need good cornerbacks.
Also, they face elite QBs like Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson twice, and Jared Goff. If the secondary doesn’t hold its own, the Steelers won’t have much chance to win the games and go to the playoffs.
