You’d assume that a team that just went to the NFC Championship Game would try to keep their stars happy and on the roster. The Washington Commanders have not done that, as their best receiver, Terry McLaurin is not happy and his contract situation doesn’t seem to progress. Another one of Jayden Daniels‘ weapons has spoken about it.
Zach Ertz has been speaking a lot with the media recently. Appearing on Up & Adams, he was asked about this issue with McLaurin‘s contract. “I’m not privy to the conversations. But what is it? July 16? The first game is September 7. There’s a lot of time between now and then to get something done. But at the end of the day, everyone knows Terry’s working his butt off whether he’s in the building or not in the building,” Ertz said.
Ertz is a player who has been in this situation before, with a public contractual war. He is an authorized voice on this subject and he is, to some degree, supporting the receiver. “But what I do know is Terry’s going to do everything he can to be at his best when his best is needed… For me, I’m rooting for Terry. I hope he gets paid as much as he wants to get paid. But in terms of the business side of it, I’m going to stay far away from that.“
The McLaurin saga doesn’t seem to end
Reportedly, McLaurin hasn’t decided yet if he will attend training camp or not. The wideout has publicly said he is frustrated with the situation. He is adamant on staying but won’t settle for a price that isn’t the one that he feels he deserves.
Jayden Daniels found much of his success in his NFL rookie season thanks to McLaurin. He was the receiver Daniels always found when in a hurry or in need of a big play. It seems like everyone on the team is looking for McLaurin to stay, except for the team…
There’s still time, but the sooner the better
As Ertz said himself, they need McLaurin for Week 1 of the NFL, not for July’s training camp. So there is time. However, the latest this is resolved, the less time McLaurin has to get into football rhythm.
For a team that’s playing in the NFC East, which is a tough division, they can’t just ignore these timeframes. They need to be ‘pedal-to-the-metal‘ from Week 1. As both parts are far from meeting each other’s demands, it seems even players within the Commanders building are starting to voice their opinions.
