Mac Jones was sharp with 2 touchdowns and 342 yards in the San Francisco 49ers‘ 26-23 victory over the Los Angeles Rams. Despite another good outing, the backup quarterback was quick to clarify that he didn’t come to the team to steal Brock Purdy‘s job.
“They brought me here to play as a backup and that’s my job. Brock’s the starter of this team,” Jones said after the game against the Rams. “Right now he’s dealing with something and for him to go out last week and play when you probably know he’s not at full health shows a lot.”
The 49ers backup was clear that his sole focus is collaborating with the team and Purdy: “I’m just trying to get some wins for this team so it helps us down the line.” Jones’s statement marked the second time he’s addressed the issue, signaling his contentment with his role as the team’s reliable QB2.
Shanahan supports Jones as Quarterback
Kyle Shanahan praised Mac Jones for his gutsy outing against the Rams, highlighting the way he carried the offense early on. “He played his a– off. Was unbelievable in the first half,” Shanahan said, crediting Jones for setting the tone in a tough matchup against Rams.
Even after taking hits, Jones impressed his coach with his composure under pressure. “Got banged up in the second half and battled through it and protected the ball… throwing the ball that many times without having a turnover,” Shanahan noted, calling it a performance full of resilience.
So far this season, Jones has been integral to three 49ers victories, totaling 906 yards and 6 touchdowns with just a single interception. This backup campaign is likely to surpass his previous seasons as a starter with other teams, as he has already broken his personal best for yards gained per game played with an impressive 301.7 yards.
