The Washington Capitals continue working to strengthen their roster ahead of the 2025–26 NHL season. Team captain and the league’s all-time leading scorer, Alex Ovechkin, is entering one of his final campaigns as a professional, and the franchise is focused on solidifying its core.

Ovechkin will play the final season of his current contract in 2025–26, and although there is no official confirmation about his retirement, the team needs to start planning for a transition to a new era, or even a possible extension. The 39-year-old forward broke Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals record and remains the emotional leader of the franchise.

At the end of May, an administrative mistake sparked rumors when the Capitals sent an email to season-ticket holders referring to the 2025–26 campaign as Ovechkin’s “final NHL season.” This immediately fueled speculation, but the team later clarified the error. Meanwhile, the Caps secured an important piece for their future.

Who is the player the Caps locked in?

Washington moved quickly to secure one of its most valuable young assets. According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman from Sportsnet, Slovak defenseman Martin Fehervary will sign a seven-year, $42 million extension (averaging $6 million per season).

Fehervary is coming off a strong season in which he led the team in blocked shots and solidified his role as a key part of Washington’s defensive scheme. His signing is expected to be finalized in the coming hours, symbolizing the balance between the final chapters of the Ovechkin era and the long-term stability the modern NHL demands.

What do the Caps gain from Fehervary’s extension?

With this extension, Washington reduces defensive uncertainty and gains flexibility to plan future moves, especially regarding veterans like John Carlson. The twofold approach is clear: keep Ovechkin motivated for what could be his final season while building a young, competitive core for the future.
