On Sunday, August 8, the Tokyo Olympics 2020have officially come to an end with the closing ceremony, which transferred the torch to Paris for the 2024 Olympic Games. The United Stateswomen’s basketball team won their eighth gold in a row, while the USwomen’s volleyball team won theirfirst gold in the sport’s history, helping the Americans pass China at the buzzer on top of thegold-medal standings on Sunday.

New records and champions were established during the 17-day Tokyo Olympics. This year’s closing ceremony was special because of the current coronavirus outbreak in Japan and throughout the world. The next Summer Olympics will be held in Paris, France, from July 26 to August 11, 2024.

Paris will become only the second city in history to hold the Olympics three times, following London (1908, 1948, and 2012). In addition to honoring the 100th anniversary of the 1924 Paris Games, France will host its sixth Olympic Games in 2024.

Despite trailing China throughout much of the Games, the United States finished with the most medals of any nation.Team US haswon a total of 113 medals, including 39 gold, 41 silver, and 33 bronze medals.

China concludedthe Olympicsin second place with 88 medals, 38 of which were gold, 32 silver, and 18 bronze medals. The Russian Olympic Committee ended in third with 71 medals (20 gold, 28 silver, and 23 bronze).

It was China who were on the edge of winning the most gold medals on Sunday, but the USAovertook them thanks to thevictories in women’s basketball and volleyball, as well as in cycling, in which the American team have earned their first-ever gold medal.
