NBA analyst believes the Dallas Mavericks shouldn’t take Duke’s Cooper Flagg

As great a player as Cooper Flagg is, Jay Williams believes the Mavericks could do better at No. 1.

The Duke Blue Devils will have another player on their long list of elite recruits entering the NBA. More specifically, they will have yet another first-overall pick in the NBA Draft.

The Dallas Mavericks won the NBA Draft Lottery, meaning they will most likely take Cooper Flagg. It was a shocking turn of events, considering they had less than a2% chance of winning.

Flagg is the consensus clear-cut No. 1 selection. However, as good a prospect as he is, NBA analyst Jay Williams believes the team should look to trade that selection instead.

Jay Williams says Dallas should trade the No. 1 pick

The basketball part of me loves the thought of Anthony Davis, Cooper Flagg, and Dereck Lively in the frontcourt,” Williams said on ESPN. “But when I look at the value, could you potentially package something like this to get a Giannis? Could you package it in a one-way trade to get a Devin Booker? Could you get a Tyrese Maxey? If your championship window is in two to three years, could you utilize that pick to get some assets to get somebody who is ready to contribute with you right now, with the pressure in the West Coast?”

Williams’ hot makes sense to a degree, and sometimes, a team can be better off moving on from the first-overall pick. This time, however, that might not be the case at all.

Flagg is one of the best and most well-rounded prospects the game has ever seen, and as tempting as it could be to land a win-now player, he can help them win right away and for years to come.
