MLB News: DJ LeMahieu reportedly plans to join contender after DFA by Aaron Judge’s Yankees

After being designated for assignment by the New York Yankees, the team led by Aaron Judge, veteran infielder DJ LeMahieu is reportedly looking to join a contender—signaling he’s not ready to walk away from MLB just yet.

DJ LeMahieu’s time with the New York Yankees alongside Aaron Judge has come to an end, but the veteran infielder isn’t walking away from the game just yet. Once an elite two-way contributor, the 37-year-old was designated for assignment amid a crowded infield and declining production.

While his offensive numbers have dipped in recent seasons, LeMahieu still sees himself as a valuable piece for a contender—and he’s not rushing into anything. Instead, the three-time All-Star is exercising patience and strategy.

According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, LeMahieu “plans to wait until the trade deadline passes before signing with another team. He didn’t want to join a club and then suddenly find his spot in jeopardy if his new team acquired another player.”

Could DJ LeMahieu still be a valuable asset?

Despite being cut by the Yankees, LeMahieu is betting on himself. His resume remains impressive: a two-time batting champion, four-time Gold Glove winner, and MVP finalist in back-to-back years (2019–2020). His defensive versatility—capable of playing first, second, and third base—still makes him a low-risk, potentially high-reward pickup for any club seeking depth and leadership.

What’s next for the veteran infielder?

LeMahieu struggled mightily in 2024, slashing just .206/.269/.336 with a -1.6 bWAR. While a calf strain delayed his 2025 debut, he did raise his average to .266 in July, though his OPS remained below league average. With the Yankees committed to upgrading third base, manager Aaron Boone moved him into a bench role before the front office made the tough decision.

Still, LeMahieu believes he has more baseball left—and with his remaining Yankees salary offsetting costs, a new team could sign him for the prorated minimum. For now, he waits, eyeing the post-deadline landscape and hoping the right opportunity arises.
