Phillies aces Zack Wheeler and Ranger Suarez break silence on All-Star Game absence

Unfortunately for the Philadelphia Phillies fans, they won’t get to see Zack Wheeler — and certainly not Ranger Suárez — in this year’s All-Star Game. It’s a decision that may have caught some by surprise, but both pitchers have solid reasons for sitting it out.

Zack Wheeler is enjoying a stellar season with the Philadelphia Phillies, boasting nine wins and only three losses. Ranger Suárez is also having a strong year with seven victories, yet both pitchers have opted not to participate in the All-Star Game.

Suárez recently pitched in a game where the Phillies unfortunately fell 4-2 to the Padres. It was a lengthy outing for him, going 6.2 innings, and marked his first decision loss of July. Prior to that, he started in the Phillies’ 5-0 victory against the Padres on July 5th.

Meanwhile, Wheeler, who also won’t be at the All-Star Game as some anticipated, hasn’t pitched since July 6th. In that outing, he threw a complete nine innings on the mound, securing a solid 3-1 victory for his team against the Reds.

Why are Wheeler and Suárez skipping the All-Star Game?

Both pitchers made it clear: they’re choosing rest over participation. Wheeler explained, “I’d just rather get myself ready to go for the second half… This is what I’m worried about,” referring to the physical toll of his recent long outing. Suárez echoed the same sentiment, saying he also wants to prioritize rest before the second half of the MLB season begins.

Ranger Suarez

Ranger Suarez has become the most reliable arm in the Philadelphia Phillies’ rotation, showcasing his strength on the mound after overcoming past injuries.

While the Phillies continue to lead the NL East over the Mets and others, managing their pitching staff has become crucial. The rotation has already dealt with injuries and inconsistent performances this year — making Wheeler and Suárez’s health a top priority moving forward.

Which Phillies are headed to the All-Star Game?

As of now, Kyle Schwarber is the only Phillie confirmed to participate in this year’s All-Star Game. Wheeler had been selected, but with his decision to step away and rest, Schwarber will be the lone representative for Philadelphia.

Manager Rob Thomson voiced his support but also his frustration with the limited selections. “I’m happy for Kyle Schwarber and Zack Wheeler being All-Stars,” he said, “but I believe Trea Turner, Cristopher Sánchez, and Ranger Suárez should be there as well.”
