Ranger Suarez has quietly become the most reliable arm in the Philadelphia Phillies rotation, especially with the team dealing with injuries and rotation uncertainty. While Zack Wheeler and Cristopher Sanchez continue to do their part, Suarez has surged, driving up his value as he approaches free agency.

Over the past month, Suarez has been nearly untouchable, with a 1.16 ERA and 0.96 WHIP across his last seven starts, excluding his first outing back from the injured list. His most recent performance was a dominant seven shutout innings against the Toronto Blue Jays, striking out six and allowing just four hits.

Suarez’s impressive stretch isn’t a fluke—it’s a result of one simple factor: health. After years of battling injuries, particularly recurring back issues, Suarez finally feels at full strength and is showcasing his true potential on the mound.

Health at the core of Suarez’s success

Suarez was quick to point to his health as the primary factor behind his resurgence. Primarily, it’s being healthy,” Suarez toldNBC Sports Philadelphia’s Corey Seidman. “I know what I’m capable of when I’m healthy, and I’m capable of doing great things.”

Health has been a significant hurdle for Suarez throughout his career. He’s been on the injured list five times over the past four seasons, with three of those stints attributed to back problems. But when he’s right, Suarez has proven to be one of the Phillies’ most dependable starters. In 2024, before another back injury derailed his second half, Suarez posted a 2.76 ERA and 1.04 WHIP before the All-Star Break.

Suarez’s health even more critical for Phillies’ rotation

With Aaron Nola out for an extended period due to a stress fracture, Suarez’s role has become even more important for the Phillies’ pitching staff. Taijuan Walker has been shifted into a one-inning reliever role, and Andrew Painter has struggled in Triple-A, leaving the Phillies’ rotation thin.
