A former Philadelphia Phillies catcher and respected veteran with over a decade in the majors is officially stepping away from the game. The 37-year-old is set to sign a one-day contract this weekend, allowing him to retire with the franchise where he made his biggest mark.
Wilson Ramos, a two-time All-Star and Silver Slugger Award winner, will conclude his career with the Washington Nationals, according to MASN’s Dan Kolko. Ramos last played in the majors during the 2021 season, but he remained a respected figure across the league due to his production, leadership, and perseverance behind the plate.
In 990 career games, Ramos posted a .271 average with 136 home runs and 534 RBIs, finishing with a 15.3 WAR, per Baseball Reference. He spent time with the Twins, Rays, Mets, Tigers, and Guardians, but no stretch was more impactful than his six seasons in Washington.
Career year and all-star peak in Washington
Ramos had his best season in 2016, batting .307 with 22 home runs and 80 RBIs for the Nationals. That performance earned him a second All-Star selection and a Silver Slugger Award. He departed the franchise at year’s end, but his contributions left a lasting impression, cementing him as one of the top offensive catchers of the decade.

Brief but impactful stop in Philadelphia
Traded to the Phillies midseason in 2018, Ramos provided instant value, slashing .337/.396/.438 in 33 games with 17 RBIs. Though his time in Philadelphia was short, his impact at the plate was undeniable during their playoff push.
