The Detroit Tigers received difficult news on Wednesday as it was confirmed that Jackson Jobe, one of their top young pitching prospects, will require Tommy John surgery, effectively ending his 2025 MLB season. The 21-year-old right-hander had shown promise in his short time with the team, but an injury suffered in May has now turned into a long-term setback.

Jobe’s most recent start came on May 28th against the San Francisco Giants, where his velocity noticeably dropped during the outing. After a series of evaluations, it was revealed that Jobe had suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL), and surgery became the only viable option.

“As is standard medical evaluation process, we sought additional evaluations,” said Tigers General Manager Jeff Greenberg, as reported by MLB.com. “Through that evaluation process, the UCL injury was also discovered. From there, there were a series of conversations between Jackson, the doctors, and the medical staff. And ultimately, surgery was determined as the path.”

A tough blow for the Tigers

For the Tigers, Jobe’s injury comes at a particularly challenging time. The team has been enjoying a strong season, and the loss of Jobe, a key future piece of the rotation, is a major setback. Despite the unfortunate news, Greenberg expressed confidence that Jobe’s determination and work ethic would guide him through the tough road ahead.

It’s obviously really disappointing news,” Greenberg said. “I really feel for Jackson. Obviously, everybody sees the talent. He made a really positive impression to this team in his short time here. He’s going to work through this. He’s a very determined individual. I have no question he’ll work through this process and be a really important contributor for this team for a very long time.”
