The NBA Summer League can be the place where stars are born. With multiple draft picks starting to earn their first minutes, it’s also a time for them to display their talents and prove they’re the real deal. Teams like the Philadelphia 76ers are looking for pieces to compliment their stars, in this case, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. It seems they might be excited about one of those new faces.
The 76ers drafted VJ Edgecombe with the No. 3 pick in the draft. Out of Baylor, Edgecombe didn’t waste any time, as he dominated all things basketball. Edgecombe dropped 28 points, grabbed 10 boards, and got 4 assists. It all was complimented with two blocks and one steal.
Even if the Sixers lost to the Jazz by four points, Edgecombe made his mark. He was also battling no. 5 overall pick, Ace Bailey. The Sixers rookie outplayed the Jazz rookie as Bailey ended with a mere 8 points and shot 3-for-13.
The 76ers really need someone to step up for them
The 76ers need a third piece to be able to contend once again. Joel Embiid is a top-tier player in the NBA, however, injuries always hamper his seasons. As for the other stuff, Tyrese Maxey will carry the primary load on offense as he’s rose to be one of the best guards in the league. Having Edgecombe as a credible threat will make this team one to be reckoned with in the East.

VJ Edgecombe #77 of the Philadelphia 76ers brings the ball up the court during the first half of their NBA Summer League game against the Utah Jazz at the Jon M. Huntsman Center on July 5, 2025 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
There’s also Paul George on the team, however, he is really facing the possibility of being traded. Edgecombe would be the shooting guard here and he will be able to get big minutes. He might not be the starting shooting guard as first, but if he keeps impressing, he will be key on the rotation.

The Sixers need a bounceback season
The 76ers ended last season with a 24-58 record, which made them 13th in the conference. Injuries hurt this team as Maxey only played 52 games, Embiid 19, George 41, and Quentin Grimes 28.
This is a better team than 24-58. The whole ‘Trust The Process‘ era has been nothing but disappointing for Sixers’ fans. They all want to forget that and enter a new era and maybe Edgecombe is the representative of this new phase.
