Thus far, it hasn’t paid off, but it sure has proven that the team is trying to accomplish something bigger than just one individual.



Notably, Harden claims to know about sacrifice as well. He allegedly did so during his days with the<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/philadelphia-76ers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> Philadelphia 76ers</a>, helping Daryl Morey out so he could walk his way around the salary cap and improve the team for years to come.



We already know how that ended, with Harden publically calling Morey ‘a liar’ and hinting at being promised a max contract in his next deal if he agreed to take a pay cut in free agency. Not only was that a violation of the league’s rules, but it also ended a years-long relationship between Harden and the one who trusted him the most.



With that in mind, the former <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/houston-rockets" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Houston Rockets</a> star had a tell-all interview with Sam Amick of The Athletic, and NBA Commissioner Adam Silver might be taking notes already.

<h2>Harden Confirms Morey Promised Him A Max Contract</h2>



Talking about his frustration and how things ended up between the two, Harden stated that he had given up so much money already, which is why he wanted to leave for a place where he could compete at a high level while also getting paid. Then, he confirmed Morey had promised him a max contract, which is a clear violation of the league’s policies:

“Harden: These last few years, I sacrificed so much — whether it’s role, whether it’s financial — that, at this point, it’s over with. I just want to be able to move forward and still have the opportunity to make some money and obviously win at the highest level.



Amick: So you mention the financial part, and I was hoping you could clarify one aspect of that situation. Were you actually told by the Sixers that you had that deal coming?



Harden: A max?



Amick: Yeah.



Harden: Yeah.



Amick: That was said by Daryl?



Harden: Yes. Yes.”



There you go. Whether the league will do anything about this or not remains to be seen, but it pretty much confirmed what most fans and analysts speculated since the beginning of the saga.

<h2>Harden Felt Betrayed</h2>



The former MVP compared his relationship with Morey — which dated way back to his days with the Rockets — to a marriage. He didn’t care for the way his GM reportedly iced him out and felt disrespected by it:



“Instead of (Morey) having a conversation with me (about free agency) or saying, ‘All right James, we don’t want to offer you this, but we have this.’ Then we go back and forth, and that’s a dialogue,” Harden said. “But you just ice me out? Then it’s like, you don’t respect me as much as I thought you did. You don’t need people like that, you know what I mean? So it’s just bad karma. People were throwing dirt on my name, but the good guys always win.”



Morey has a long-withstanding reputation for being kind of shady when dealing with players and other teams, so it wouldn’t be much of a surprise to see him do that. Also, it’s not like this would be the first — or even last — time something like this happens.

At the end of the day, we might never know what actually happened and how it happened, and chances are that Harden would’ve never gotten that max deal in free agency anyway. Still, he has every right to feel betrayed if Morey, indeed, made such a promise.

When asked about this turnaround, Harden credited Tyronn Lue for allowing him to be creative and get a better understanding of the rival’s defense, which gives him a chance to do more damage as a scorer and a playmaker:



“They just allow me to get creative and read the defenses and see what they’re doing on the defensive floor, and every game is different to where [Lue] sees something and I’m allowed to sit back and do it,” Harden said.

<h2>Harden Takes A Shot At Doc Rivers</h2>



Notably, Harden took another shot at Doc Rivers and the Philadelphia 76ers, complaining about the way he was deployed next to Joel Embiid. He now claims that he’s having a more similar role to the one he had in Brooklyn, as he’s a pass-first player with Kawhi Leonard and Paul George by his side:



“Not so much Philly at all, but definitely similar to Brooklyn to where [Lue] just allows me to be myself,” Harden stated. “And obviously he has certain plays and things he draws up after timeouts and whatnot, but we have our concepts. Obviously we know when [Kawhi Leonard] got it going, and [Paul George] got it going or in the pick and roll we’re generating really efficient shots. It’s pretty simple. It’s a game.”



This isn’t the first time that Harden has complained about his days in Philadelphia. He had already stated that the Sixers never gave him a long leash, even though he was their primary ball-handler, playmaker, and led the league in assists per game and total assists during his days there.

Whatever the case, moving Westbrook to the second unit was just what they needed to do to get over the hump. Now, Kawhi Leonard admits that having Harden pulling the strings of the offense takes so much pressure off him:

The Los Angeles Lakers should always be included on any list when it comes to All-Stars or borderline All-Stars available for trade, especially if LeBron James is also in town. In LaVine’s case, the ties are obvious, as he went to college at UCLA and is also represented by Klutch Sports.



The Lakers could benefit a lot from LaVine’s shooting and floor-spacing, not to mention he could be another playmaker every now and then. However, they might not have enough assets to convince the Bulls to take whatever they have to offer for him.



<h2>2. Philadelphia 76ers</h2>



The Philadelphia 76ers are a seamless fit. He fits their timeline and would obviously be a major offensive upgrade over Tobias Harris, even if he gives up some size. The defense could be an issue, but that Big 3 with Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid would be unstoppable.



Daryl Morey and the Sixers have more than enough assets to put together an offer the Bulls cannot turn down. On the downside, they might want to wait and spend those chips whenever — if — a bigger-profile player becomes available at some point.

The Miami Heat have failed to land Donovan Mitchell, Kevin Durant, Bradley Beal, Kyrie Irving, and Russell Westbrook. Erik Spoelstra and Pat Riley have reportedly low-balled other teams, and they’ve ended up empty-handed. That simply cannot happen anymore.

At the end of the day, the Bulls need to look at how to maximize LaVine’s value, and that might mean trading him soon before his discontent becomes all the more evident. If other teams know for a fact he wants to go, they have no incentive to make a big offer for his services.

When asked about the biggest challenge he had to overcome, the 34-year-old suggested he couldn’t be his true self in the City of Brotherly Love. According to Harden, he didn’t have so much freedom on the court.



“Philly is just changing my role knowing I can give more, knowing I can do more, but if you want me to be honest, it’s like being on a leash… I never really had that opportunity [to score and facilitate freely],” Harden said, via Tomer Azarly of ClutchPoints.

Harden expanded on what he meant by being on a leash, claiming that he didn’t feel enough confidence from the Sixers to let him do his thing. “I think the game and I’m a creator on the court… [Need] somebody that trusts me, that believes in me, that understands me, that I’m not a system player. Harden’s comments made some noise on social media as the stats reflect he carried the ball most of the time with the Sixers. In fact, only Luka Doncic had more ball possession per game than Harden last season. 



Besides, many saw the guard’s comments as an excuse for his disappointing performances when it mattered the most. After all, the reason the Sixers traded for Harden in 2022 was to help Joel Embiid win a championship. But the team still failed to make it past the Eastern Conference semifinals.

When they lost in the 2022 playoffs, Daryl Morey and company decided to run things back with Harden anyway. Though they weren’t giving up on him this year either, the Sixers were sure about one thing: they wouldn’t hand Harden the supermax extension he seeked. 



That seemed to be a turning point in their relationship, as Harden opted into his player option only to request a trade. The 34-year-old said his idea when he left Brooklyn was to retire as a Sixer, blaming the front office for his exit. “They didn’t want me, and it is that simple,” Harden said.

<h2>Sixers Will Play The Waiting Game</h2>



Sam Amick of The Athletic recently reported that the Sixers will continue to stay active in trade talks. He believes Daryl Morey would’ve never traded Harden unless he was 100% certain that another star could potentially become available. However, that may not happen now or even this season:



“It’s safe to assume Morey has a list of targets for his possible replacement, but he’s also well aware that it could take some time for those players, whoever they might be, to become available,” wrote Amick. “The annual uptick in desperation doesn’t typically come until later – like, say, much closer to the league’s Feb. 8 trade deadline.”



He’s not the only analyst who believes the Sixers are playing the long game. According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, the Sixers have identified Zach LaVine, OG Aunoby, Donovan Mitchell, and even Bojan Bogdanovic as potential replacements for his disgruntled All-Star.



“Some potential targets to keep an eye on for Philadelphia include Zach LaVine, who can spread the floor, and OG Anunoby, who is loved by coach Nick Nurse, which I think is important,” said Scotto. “Other names Philadelphia will monitor include Cavaliers All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell and Pistons forward Bojan Bogdanovic, I’m told.”

<h2>One Door Closes, One Window Opens</h2>



It wasn’t a coincidence to see that the Sixers waited this long to deal Harden. They wanted to get a glimpse of Tyrese Maxey’s development — or lack thereof — and a first look at their team under coach Nick Nurse, and the early returns were quite encouraging.



Maxey’s growth as a shot-creator, his ability to push the pace on the break, and his fit next to <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/joel-embiid" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Joel Embiid</a> convinced the organization that they would be just fine sans Harden. Also, their new-look offense has all players getting touches, so they didn’t need another ball-dominant initiator.

Embiid isn’t getting any younger, and there’s more pressure on his shoulders now than ever, especially after another disappointing playoff run. In the end, the veteran guard proved his doubters right. Harden failed to perform when it mattered the most, as the Sixers suffered back-to-back second-round eliminations.



This offseason, only a year and a half after leaving the Nets, Harden submitted a trade request out of Philadelphia. The Sixers didn’t grant his wish until this week, when they sent him to the Los Angeles Clippers. Though the move didn’t go as they expected, Daryl Morey has no regrets about pursuing Harden back then. 



“In this case, I think with the information we had at the time — which is I think how you can judge things — it was a very good trade,” Morey said, via ClutchPoints. “Obviously, we were in a tough situation then and when you’re in that and you jump to something, you want to continue to give yourself a chance to win — just like this trade did. Obviously, this one still is to be written a little bit with like, some of the assets we got.”

<h2>The fractured relationship between Daryl Morey and James Harden</h2>



One of the biggest storylines when Harden joined the Sixers was his reunion with Morey, who had already traded for The Beard when he was the general manager of the Houston Rockets.

They had a great memory from each other after their time together in Houston, which is why they did everything to reunite in the City of Brotherly Love. Harden failed to help Embiid in last year’s playoffs, but Morey decided to give him another chance.



Their relationship ended up taking a huge twist this offseason. After another playoff collapse, the Sixers didn’t feel like giving Harden the supermax extension he demanded. The guard opted into his player option but only to be traded, and there was no turning back.



Harden made his thoughts about Morey abundantly clear in the summer, calling the Sixers’ President of Basketball Operations a “liar,” claiming he will never be part of an organization run by Morey again. In the weeks prior to the Clippers trade, Harden said his relationship with the 76ers front office was beyond repair.



<h2>Harden gets what he wants, again</h2>



Though it took him months, Harden finally got traded to the Clippers, his preferred landing spot this offseason. In January 2021, it was the Nets. The following year, it was the Sixers.

Harden has constantly changed locations seeking to increase his chances of winning an elusive ring, but it feels like he never spends enough time with one team to win that coveted championship.



Now he’ll be part of a star-studded team next to the likes of Kawhi Leonard, Paul George, and Russell Westbrook. On paper, we’re talking about a possible contender. But many things can happen between now and May.



Harden has to be prepared for that. Injuries have already held the Clippers back in the last few years, so the title challenge may not be that easy. Besides, the Western Conference is stacked this season. The question is whether Harden will stick to them anyway, because his reputation for constantly changing teams raises doubts.

After months of back and forth, Daryl Morey finally admitted defeat. Harden was traded alongside P.J. Tucker and Filip Petrusev to the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/los-angeles-clippers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Los Angeles Clippers</a> in exchange for Robert Covington, Marcus Morris Sr., KJ Martin, Nic Batum, a 2028 unprotected first-round pick, two second-round picks, a 2029 pick swap, and an additional first-round pick that will go to a third team, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.



While none of the players and assets involved in the deal should move the needle, this trade will have enormous implications for both teams involved and the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/nba" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NBA</a> as a whole. With that in mind, we’ll break it down to try and explain what’s going to change for everybody.



<h2>The Clippers Get A Star, Save Money</h2>



At first glance, the Los Angeles Clippers went from a very good team to a championship contender. They already had two elite talents on their roster, such as Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, but their injury woes raised skepticism.

Now, they have an elite plan B with Harden next to Russell Westbrook. Worst case scenario, they’ll still have two former All-Stars, depth, and a great coach weathering the storm. But if they manage to stay healthy, it’s hard to envision any team taking them down in a seven-game series.



Harden is also on an expiring deal, and with the contracts they’re getting in return, they could save up to $60 million in the offseason. That will allow them to either re-sign him if things go well or pursue another star in free agency. 



<h2>The Sixers Move On</h2>



The Philadelphia 76ers may have won by subtraction. Harden didn’t want to be there, and all the drama and distractions weren’t doing this team any favors. They needed to move on from him months ago, and they could’ve even landed a better return.



Through the first three games of the season, they’ve already seen what Tyrese Maxey could give them as the primary ball-handler and secondary scorer next to Joel Embiid. He’s been stellar as a scorer, and his ability to push the break has helped them dominate in transition.

Embiid needs more stability, especially with all the rumors about his future and whether he wants to leave or not. The Sixers have a flurry of solid role players that can help him pick up the slack, and they can now focus solely on basketball.

The NBA world will set all eyes on Harden and the Clippers. He’s been granted a trade for the third time in his last four years, and he won’t get another opportunity to handpick his next destination — outside of free agency, obviously.



There was a lot of chatter about how NBA teams were no longer interested in his services. He’s not getting any younger, and while everybody knows what he’s capable of as a scorer and playmaker, his history of insubordination, plus his questionable off-court habits, could drive multiple teams away.

Woj added that the Los Angeles-based franchised may re-engage in trade talks for the 34-year-old, but they’re not losing sleep over it. After all, the Clippers know there are not other suitors out there. That gives them leverage, especially if the season goes on and Harden is still stuck in the City of Brotherly Love.

Following a 10-day absence from the team to take care of a personal matter, Harden returned to practice on Wednesday. However, Nick Nurse said he won’t take part in the Sixers’ opening game of the season agains the Bucks on Thursday night.

<h2>Harden may have no option but to stay</h2>



The Harden saga seems to bring all kinds of news every day except that he finally got traded, which makes one wonder where this situation will ultimately lead. The former MVP still belongs to the 76ers and has reported to training camp this summer.



The truth is that his market has been slim this offseason. To be fair, Harden has been a true professional throughout this situation. The player reported to training camp, letting the Sixers handle things even though there were no signs of progress. He was out for 10 days, but he was excused by the team to handle a personal matter.

On Wednesday, Harden returned to the Philadelphia 76ers’ facilities for practice, just one day before the team starts the 2023-24 NBA season in Milwaukee. 76ers head coach Nick Nurse later addressed this situation with the media:



“He was in some of the stuff early. Obviously, we’re doing a lot of game prep stuff so he didn’t take part in much of that. It was a pretty short practice at that. So, he was in practice at the start, and he was there at the end, but we had to get ready for our game with the guys that are going to be playing.”



Nurse added that, despite Harden is already back with the team, he will not travel for the road game against the Bucks. The Sixers coach explained that since The Beard was out for 10 days, he’s in “ramp-up” phase once again.

Harden’s position, however, seems to be the same. The feeling is that the guard still wants to be traded, and his presence with the team is only to respect his current deal. Only time will tell whether he finally gets what he wants before February.

Harden argued that GM Daryl Morey lied to him. That implies that Morey promised to sign him to a max contract extension and then didn’t. Now, he claims he has lost all confidence in him and will never play for an organization that hires him.



No one knows what was said in those meetings between him and Morey. Ironically, Morey was the one who signed him to most of his multi-million contract deals and the one who trusted him every step of the way, even up to this day in Philadelphia.



But Harden has always marched to his own beat, and he’s now looking to play for his fourth team in the past five years. That’s why former <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/brooklyn-nets" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Brooklyn Nets</a> star Kenyon Martin went full steam at him in the latest edition of Gilbert Arenas’ podcast.

<h2>Kenyon Martin Rips James Harden</h2>



Martin criticized Harden for even thinking he was worthy of a max contract after the way he’s played lately. He believes the former MVP is undeserving of a top-tier contract at this point in his career:



“If I’m James Harden, I can’t expect them people to give me another five years for 250 million dollars, dog!” Martin said on Gil’s Arena. “Could give a f–k what he promise me sitting at the dinner table. If I’m being honest, he tell me that sh-t, I’m leaving that meeting thinkin’ he’s a f–kin’ liar.”



Martin also mocked Harden for the way he’s played for his past three teams. They have no silverware to show for after his stops there, and it’s not like he left any of those places on great terms:



“If I’m being honest with myself in this situation, everything that I’ve put on the table? The last three stops? Everything that I’ve put on the table, why would somebody sign me up for another five [years] for the maximum amount of money they could possibly give me? We’re naive,” Martin continued.

<h2>Harden Can Still Play</h2>

Harden is no longer the top-tier player he used to be. He’s 33 years old and has struggled with injuries over the past couple of years, and he’s lost that burst and explosiveness to the rim. But he can still be an elite contributor to a championship-caliber team if he buys in.



While not an elite scorer anymore, he did lead the league in assists last season at 10.7. His defense has never been his cover letter, but he’s improved significantly in the post, and even if he won’t put up 50 points anymore, he’s still a threat from all three levels and demands defensive attention.

Even so, it’s hard to blame teams for being unfazed by his trade availability. He’s burned all bridges behind him, and you can only force your way out of a team so many times before you also force your way out of the league.

The <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/philadelphia-76ers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Philadelphia 76ers</a> — and, more specifically, Daryl Morey — continue to hold onto <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/james-harden" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">James Harden</a> against his will. The former MVP called him a liar and openly demanded a trade, yet he refuses to take a penny on the dollar for him.



However, the Sixers might not have much of a choice at this point. With the start of the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/nba" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NBA</a> season just one week away, they have no leverage right now, especially considering the lack of league-wide interest in Harden’s services.



The<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/los-angeles-clippers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> Los Angeles Clippers</a> reportedly remain engaged in trade talks for Harden, who also wants to play there. Nonetheless, they’re reluctant to give up two first-round picks and/or Terance Mann on any deal, and they know they’re only bidding against themselves right now.



<h2>Clippers Could Pursue Malcolm Brogdon Instead</h2>



Even with Russell Westbrook, the Clippers are in need of a lead guard, which was made evident by their reported interest in Jrue Holiday. With that in mind, they could pivot and shift their attention toward Malcolm Brodgon, who should be easier to get.

“Outside factors have also complicated those discussions. Both the Clippers and Sixers made attempts to trade for Jrue Holiday during his brief stay in Portland, and the Clippers continue to have interest in Blazers guard Malcolm Brogdon,” reported Kyle Neubeck of PHLY Sports.



The Portland Trail Blazers have no use for Brogdon with Scoot Henderson and Anfernee Simons there, and they’d gladly part ways with him in return for draft capital. He’s not the scorer or playmaker Harden is, but they don’t need that much offense with Paul George and Kawhi Leonard by his side.



<h2>Harden No Longer Trusts The Sixers</h2>



This should put plenty of pressure on Morey and the Sixers to try and deal Harden soon. He’s playing ball and has been a professional throughout training camp in the preseason because he’s looking forward to being traded, and his attitude could take a major U-turn if he doesn’t feel like the Sixers are actively trying to get him traded.



Harden has already stated that there’s no way to repair his relationship with Morey. He no longer trusts him, and he has no intention whatsoever of extending his stay with the organization any further:

“For me, it’s just, trusting people you’ve known for over a decade,” Harden said. “And when I got traded here, my whole thing was I wanted to retire a Sixer. I wanted to be here and retire a Sixer. The front office didn’t have that in their future plans. It’s literally out of my control. It’s something I didn’t want to happen, to be in this position. But I’ve got to make a decision for my family.”

Morey has a history of overpricing his assets and holding onto them for long, perhaps longer than he should. At this point, it’s the market — not him — the one that’s setting a price for Harden, and he needs to take whatever the Clippers are willing to give up for him before his trade value plummets even further.
