Kevin Durant receives big warning from former NBA star: 'You don't want to end your career like that'

As the 2024-25 NBA season draws to a close, speculation surrounding Kevin Durant's future with the Phoenix Suns continues to mount. Recently, a former NBA star has issued a strong warning to the forward.

As the 2024-25 season progresses, conversations about Kevin Durantā€˜s future are intensifying. The forward, currently under contract with the Phoenix Suns through the summer of 2026, faces growing speculation that he may move on to another team at the conclusion of this season. In light of this, a former NBA star has offered a blunt piece of advice to Kevin.

ā€œNo more superteams for KD,ā€ Lou Williams said during a recent interview on Run It Back. He went on to suggest possible destinations that, in his opinion, Durant should avoid in the future. ā€œWith the Lakers, with the Mavs, it’s going to be the same old narratives, same old critiques, same criticism,ā€ he noted.

ā€œEvery time they lose a game or they don’t go on a run that we expect them, it’s gonna be the end of the world,ā€ Williams predicted. ā€œYou don’t want to end your career like that, you don’t want to spend your last years like that. Go to some young fresh energy and build from there.ā€

What the three-time NBA Sixth Man of the Year undoubtedly means is that Durant could benefit from avoiding the same criticism he received when he left the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2016 to join the Golden State Warriors.

While KD was highly successful in San Francisco, winning back-to-back championships and Finals MVP honors, many analysts and fans dismissed his achievements, arguing that he took the ā€œeasy pathā€ to success by joining a star-laden team, rather than leading a less talented franchise to the top.

Lou Williams’ advice to Durant

In the same interview, Lou Williams elaborated on what he believes would be an ideal landing spot for Kevin Durant in the final years of his career. ā€œGo somewhere where there are some up-and-coming stars that can do their thing,ā€ the former guard advised. ā€œYou can be the OG. You can be the vet, the guy they throw the ball to when they need a bucket for sure-sure. Let these young guys do the heavy lifting.ā€

Williams even pinpointed a potential destination that he believes would suit Durant well: ā€œYou go to San Antonio, it’s gonna be the Wembanyama-Fox show and… I’m not gonna say Kevin Durant is gonna be a third option, but you can allow these young guys to be the focal point of what they’re building and you can go out there and be yourself.ā€

Durant’s plans for his future

A few weeks ago, Kevin Durant shared his thoughts about the final years of his career, offering a sentiment quite similar to Lou Williams’ advice. ā€œI want to keep building with the young players in the league,ā€ Durant said in an interview on The Draymond Green Show.

ā€œI want to be respected as someone who can give back to the next generation while still competing at a high level alongside them,ā€ he continued. ā€œObviously, I can’t predict the future, but I just want to be healthy and make that choice on my own.ā€
