The San Francisco 49ers are well aware that injuries can hamper a season. Thatâs why they went and traded for a new weapon. The offense is led by quarterback Brock Purdy and running back Christian McCaffrey. Of course, all made possible by head coach Kyle Shanahan, who just clarified the role for the teamâs new weapon.
Brian Robinson was the RB1 in the Washington Commanders, but thatâs not the role he will play in The Bay. Reported by Nick Wagoner of ESPN, Shanahan said, âWe brought him here to be our (No.) 2 back. Iâve always been a big fan of Brian. Loved him coming out college⊠We were pumped that he was available and pumped that we were able to get him.â
What Shanahan is saying is that McCaffreyâs spot is safe as the number one option, but Robinson will be the second in command. However, knowing Shanahanâs brain, he will design plays where Robinson and McCaffrey will both be on the field.
Robinson is arguably the best RB2 in the NFL
Robinson has played three years in the NFL and has been the starter every single year. Heâs overcomed the 857 scrimmage yards in all three seasons. Heâs also scored 20 touchdowns in his career. Now, he is a backup, which is basically a luxury to have.

Brian Robinson Jr. #8 of the Washington Commanders looks on prior to the NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field on January 26, 2025 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Plus, McCaffrey has a big history with injuries so if, unfortunately, something goes south with CMC, they have basically a starting-caliber back ready to roll. Shanahan has ensured the teamâs running game is top-tier.

The 49ers made their intensions clear with this trade
By bringing Robinson to the team, the 49ers are sending a clear message. They want to be back in Super Bowl contention but also, itâs a statement on how the team is going to play.
The 49ers receivers are struggling with injuries since last year and that hasnât changed much. Brandon Aiyuk might be out for at least six weeks. Jauan Jennings is trending towards recovery but his Week 1 status is up in the air. Ricky Pearsall also handled some injuries during the offseason. With Robinson now on the roster, the playing style is very clear. The Niners will be as run-heavy as a team can be, donât be shocked if Brock Purdy doesnât throw as much.
