He suffered an ACL tear, his recovery has taken way longer than expected and now, it seems like his future is elsewhere, but his big contract is now a problem, since not many teams will be willing to get it for a guy who has been inactive since October 2024. This move by the Niners is likely because a cut is imminent.

Without Aiyuk, the 49ers have found two proper wideouts that are very good. Jauan Jennings is a tall, reliable pass-catcher that will give an edge on contested catches. The 49ers have built one of the most talented rosters in the NFL, but injuries have consistently derailed their championship hopes.

Heading into the 2025 season, the team may not be at full strength for Week 1. Brock Purdy’s offense could be missing a crucial piece who hasn’t fully recovered from a significant injury suffered last year.



That player is <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/brandon-aiyuk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Brandon Aiyuk</a>. The wide receiver tore his ACL and MCL in 2024, and despite a lengthy recovery process, the team is not optimistic about his availability for the season opener against the Seattle Seahawks.



According to general manager John Lynch, expectations are low for Aiyuk to be cleared in time. The 49ers are prioritizing his long-term health and don’t want to risk a setback by rushing him back.

“There’s just steps that you have to continue to hit and I’ll continue to say that Brandon is doing well in his rehab,” GM John Lynch said. “Do we have an exact date right now? No. I don’t think it’ll be Week 1, but hopefully I’m surprised. We want him fully healthy. He had a significant injury, so you have to do a significant rehab.”



<h2>Who are the 49ers’ wide receivers now?</h2>



With Deebo Samuel gone, Brandon Aiyuk was expected to step up as the team’s WR1. However, his injury now puts the 49ers in a tough spot.

For the San Francisco 49ers, putting together a successful NFL season will largely depend on solid preparation in the lead-up. Unfortunately for quarterback <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/brock-purdy">Brock Purdy</a>, he won’t be able to start training camp with two of his key offensive weapons available.


 


In the latest update, the franchise released its list of players on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, which includes wide receivers <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/brandon-aiyuk">Brandon Aiyuk</a> and Ricky Pearsall—both currently recovering from injuries.



Despite these key absences at this stage of training camp, the good news for head coach <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/kyle-shanahan">Kyle Shanahan</a> is that any of the players currently on the PUP list can be activated at any point once they are medically cleared.



In addition to the two wide receivers, four other players were also included on the PUP list: Andre Dillard, Yetur Gross-Matos, Malik Mustapha, and Curtis Robinson. Meanwhile, Ben Bartch and George Odum have been placed on the Active/Non-Football Injury list.

<h2>Brandon Aiyuk eyes a strong comeback</h2>



Returning from a challenging season, 27-year-old Brandon Aiyuk aims for a strong comeback. Last year saw his campaign cut short dramatically, as he participated in just seven games. His performance was limited to 25 receptions for 374 yards before a significant injury altered his trajectory.

A 49ers insider, Matt Maiocco, reported that <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/brandon-aiyuk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Aiyuk</a> is “doing really well, I hear that the knee is even ahead of schedule.” This is fantastic news for the team. Originally, it was expected that Aiyuk was going straight into the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. Now, that might not be needed.



Maiocco added, “Also, from what I understand, is it’s not out of the question that he could be ready Week 1.” Imagine, from being on the PUP list which would sideline him for at least four weeks, to getting close to be ready to go on Week 1.



<h2>Brock Purdy needs Aiyuk bad</h2>



After letting <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/deebo-samuel" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Deebo Samuel</a> go, the receivers’ room on the team is not as loaded as before. Jauan Jennings and Ricky Pearsall are the two best wideouts on the depth chart that are healthy right now. Aiyuk will certainly be an upgrade. However, don’t sleep on Jennings, he is poised for a breakout season.

Prior to last season where he got injured, Aiyuk’s form was very good. He had two 1,000-yard seasons and 15 touchdowns. He was undoubtedly the best receiver on the team, including Deebo Samuel.

“There are no regrets,” Lynch said on signing a four year contract extension with Aiyuk, via NBC Sports Bay Area. “We love Brandon Aiyuk as a football player. We did when we drafted him. We’re excited to move forward with him.”

Deebo Samuel‘s departure from the San Francisco 49ers was expected, as the player had expressed his desire for a change of scenery. Ultimately, his destination will be the Washington Commanders, led by Jayden Daniels. But this doesn’t end here, as <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/brock-purdy">Brock Purdy</a> could lose another key piece of his offense heading into the 2025 NFL season.


 


While the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl">NFL</a> Combine is underway, 49ers GM John Lynch spoke with the press and, when asked about a potential trade involving talented wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, he didn’t confirm his departure but stated that the team is aiming for a younger roster across all departments.



“That typically happens with really good players,” Lynch said, via SI.com. “I remember two years ago having similar conversations. You get calls and you always listen to calls. Since (head coach) Kyle (Shanahan) and I have been here, we’ve been the No. 2 cash-spending team. In the last four years, we’re the fourth-highest cash-spending team. So at some point, you have to reset a little bit, or at least recalibrate. You can’t just keep pressing the pedal.



“I think there’s some good that can come out of that. We need to get younger. I think we’re the oldest team in football after trying to make a run last year. I think it’s good to constantly get younger. Our draft class last year was a great move toward that. We’ll have four picks in the top 100. If the comp picks happen like we see it, we’ll have 10 picks overall. We’re excited about adding more youth to the great core of players we already have.”

<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/brandon-aiyuk">Brandon Aiyuk</a> signed a four-year, $120 million contract extension during the previous offseason, but unfortunately his 2024 season was cut short by a torn ACL, The 26-year-old had been San Francisco’s leading receiver in the two seasons before his unfortunate injury in 2024.

<h2>Lynch is satisfied with his offensive tackles</h2>



These are key moments in the NFL, as most franchises begin shaping their rosters for the upcoming season. However, for John Lynch, GM of the 49ers, if there’s one position he’s extremely satisfied with and doesn’t see the need to reinforce, it’s the offensive tackles.



“I think there’s some talent there,” 49ers GM John Lynch said this week to the press. “A lot of different flavors. Some really big guys, good movers, some guys that you could draft as a tackle but play at guard early in their career. That type of thing. That’s what you look for, that versatility, and I think they have that in this class.”



San Francisco has shown great talent in this department, to the point where they haven’t selected an offensive tackle in the drafts since 2021. It will be a matter of waiting until late April, when they make their next pick, to see which direction they lean toward.

An important aspect when deciding on a player in the draft is the human factor of potential prospects. Through the meetings, the members of the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/san-francisco-49ers">San Francisco 49ers</a> can draw important conclusions, especially general manager John Lynch.



“You have kind of a set way of doing it,” Lynch said to the press. “This year, there was a lot of talk about whether our coach was going to be here or not. We made a decision, Kyle made a decision that for his staff, the time would best be spent at home.



“We have those guys on zoom. We’re in the room. You get to know any pertinent questions. We like to get them on the film. I think you get to know these guys a lot, their personalities, you get to hear their recall, you get to hear their football bandwidth. Tell us about what the other team was doing. Tell us about that player you were playing against. What did you learn in your studies that week? You learn a lot about guys through that.


 


“We have some fun. We try to get them laughing and loose because these guys, as you can imagine, they’re nervous. A lot of them are sweating. So you try to break the ice. It’s fun. You do different things with different people.“

The wide receivers group has taken a huge hit, but it seems like there are no plans to replace the former Arizona State player.

“For this week, it’s not going to be ideal, but we think with Jauan, Deebo, Ricky, Jake, Chris, that group, Ronnie Bell, we’ve got enough there, and we’ll see,” Lynch said, via 49ersWebzone.com. “We always — I think our track record has shown we’re always going to field calls. We’re always going to make calls, see what’s out there, and if we can improve our team, we will. But I do like this group.”



<h2>What date is the NFL trade deadline?</h2>



If the 49ers want to hire a new wide receiver, they need to be quick. Several top wide receivers, such as <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/deandre-hopkins" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DeAndre Hopkins</a> and Amari Cooper, have already been traded, so there are not too many high-quality options left for them.
