Baker Mayfield suffered a hit on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Thursday’s practice session. Said injury caused the quarterback to get a hand contussion and now his status is up in the air as the NFL preseason begins.
He missed Friday’s practice and, according to a report from Tom Pelissero of NFL Media, Mayfield is now considered day-to-day and that the signal-caller underwent scans and tests to see the gravity of the injury.
While being day-to-day is relatively positive as this means he could come back any day soon, it’s somewhat concerning that it’s in his throwing hand. For example, Joe Burrow injured his throwing hand a couple of years ago, and that hampered his whole season. Now, that’s an extreme diagnosis on Mayfield, but the team is taking caution.
Who is Mayfield’s backup?
If Mayfield is not ready to go, the next man up is Kyle Trask, who has been the team’s backup since Brady was the Bucs’ quarterback. Trask has played on 7 NFL games, but has never started one.

Kyle Trask #2 of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers warms up prior to the game against the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium on November 24, 2024 in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
On those few snaps he’s played, Trask has completed 4 of 11 passes, 0 touchdowns and 0 interceptions. He has little to no experience in actual NFL action. The other quarterback is Connor Bazelak, a six-year College quarterback who is finally having a chance to be in an NFL roster.

The Bucs offense has mighty potential
Of course, the Buccaneers have to be praying for Mayfield to fully heal. But whoever is throwing the football, one thing is clear, they have a loaded roster to work with.
Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Jalen McMillan, Emeka Egbuka and Sterling Shepard might be the deepest wide receiving room in the whole league. If you add one of the deepest running back rooms too (Bucky Irving, Rachaad White and Sean Tucker), it’s a quarterback’s dream to play under center for the Bucs.
