Jayden Daniels had a stellar rookie year. That is usually a sign for the team, in this case, the Washington Commanders, to go all in and spend money in other areas to try and exploit the fact that their quarterback is on a rookie deal. With that in mind, Terry McLaurin, who has been the team’s best wide receiver for over half a decade, has been in contract talks, and now we have an update.
Former NFL player turned media sensation, Pat McAfee, interviewed none other than Adam Schefter, one of the most respected NFL insiders in the world. Speaking of McLaurin, Schefter sent an alarming piece of information. “There’s no update on the Terry McLaurin situation and that’s the problem.. There is quite a gap between what both sides want right now and they have not made any progress,” Schefter said. That must sent chills to the spines of Washington’s fans.
This is not what you want to hear fresh off an NFC Championship Game. You would think the team would be paying the most productive weapon they have. Not only that, but McLaurin is a leader and is also beloved by the fanbase.
Jayden needs a guy like McLaurin
McLaurin played at a Pro Bowl level last year. He had 1,096 yards and 13 touchdowns. The next player with the most receiving yards was tight end Zach Ertz with 654… That tells you all. Even if the Commanders brought Deebo Samuel, he is a different player who is best when used as a chess piece all over the field, not battling with a corner every single time.

Plus, Samuel is coming off a low season. He only managed to get 670 yards and 4 total touchdowns. That’s nowhere near the production McLaurin offers. If Washington lets McLaurin go, they must bring in a new face, because Deebo alone won’t cut it.

Washington has gold, but they are playing cheap
It’s not the first time Washington and McLaurin have been playing hard on contract disputes. McLaurin signed a three-year $68 million deal back in 2022. In 2025, McLaurin will earn $15.5 million as base salary. He wants an extension before he steps foot on a football field this season.
The Commanders found a great mix of veteran presence and young talent. They even found their franchise quarterback. Instead of playing hard ball, they should be doing all they can to surround him with top talent. And, more importantly, to keep the talent they already have.
