NFL News: Mike Tomlin and Steelers are facing a huge controversy after signing Aaron Rodgers

Turbulence is hitting Pittsburgh just as the new season approaches. From contract disputes with star players to surprising roster shake-ups, Mike Tomlin and the Steelers are dealing with a wave of off-field drama.

Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers had a very tumultuous offseason. Of course, the biggest story was Aaron Rodgers and the time he took to make a final decision, but other issues shook the team in recent weeks.

For example, George Pickens being traded to the Dallas Cowboys after general manager Omar Khan assured there were no problems with the player. In the end, the receiver did seem to be an issue in the locker room, even though his talent as the No. 1 WR was proven.

Afterwards, T.J. Watt expressed his dissatisfaction for not receiving a contract extension by skipping mandatory minicamp. Although an agreement was eventually reached, this could have sparked a new controversy for a team that cannot afford to fail, especially considering the franchise’s last Super Bowl win was 16 years ago.

What is happening between Cam Heyward and the Steelers?

Cam Heyward hasn’t been a full participant at training camp with the Steelers because he wants more money. The situation is striking since the defensive lineman just signed a three-year, $45 million contract extension in 2024.

The problem is that Heyward has seen the market skyrocket in recent months, with several defensive stars receiving much more money than what he currently has guaranteed. For that reason, he wants an update to his deal.

This is the explanation Adam Schefter gave in a surprising report. ā€œWith little fanfare, Steelers four-time All-Pro defensive tackle Cameron Heyward hasn’t fully participated in practice yet this summer as he awaits a restructured contract that has not gotten done, per sources. Heyward is scheduled to make $14.75 million this season, with $13.45 million of that already having been earned as a roster bonus in March. Heyward is seeking a raise in a defensive market that has experienced a reset this off-season. Heyward and the Steelers have addressed this privately, but have not made any progress on any reworked deal, per sources.ā€

On his official Instagram account, Cam posted a cryptic message that, according to many experts, is a jab at the Steelers. ā€œWhen you take things for granted, the things you are granted get taken.ā€

Will Steelers give a contract extension to Chris Boswell?

That is the other big question for the Steelers before the start of the 2025 season. Chris Boswell is under contract through 2026, but his deal has become outdated compared to other players in his position and, most importantly, Boswell has probably become the best kicker in the NFL. For that reason, he also wants a financial upgrade soon.
