Matthew Stafford sowed mystery about his career by announcing he would take some time to think about his future, hours after the Los Angeles Rams lost to the Philadelphia Eagles in the divisional round of the NFL playoffs.

Head coach Sean McVay, for his part, had requested days ago that Stafford’s situation be resolved sooner rather than later, as he did not want to repeat the long wait of last season, when the veteran quarterback ended up confirming his presence with the Rams just days before the start of the 2024 NFL season.

Stafford has played four years in Los Angeles, and among the factors to consider is his contract. Fortunately for McVay and Rams fans, the situation could be resolved soon, as the 36-year-old quarterback has already taken the time to reflect on his career and make a decision about his future.

Stafford’s contract with the Rams

Like last season, Stafford will have to come to terms with Los Angeles. The 36-year-old quarterback will have a $49.6 million salary cap hit for the 2025 campaign, and the Rams could save $27 million by trading him after June 1. However, LA has shown no signs of wanting to part ways with the former Detroit Lions player.

The former Lions veteran has been a key player for Los Angeles in the regular season, but especially in the postseason, where he has thrown for 533 yards and two touchdowns and has not been intercepted in two games. Stafford has shown that he has a lot more to do.
