Inter Milan and Monterrey made their Group E debut at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 this Tuesday night at the Rose Bowl. The Mexican side pulled off a first-half surprise with a goal from Sergio Ramos to take the lead, but Lautaro Martinez later scored the equalizer.
As the most recent UEFA Champions League runners-up, the Italian side arrived in the United States as one of the top favorites to win the title—and especially to advance as leaders of a group that also includes River Plate of Argentina, and Urawa Red Diamonds of Japan.
However, things didn’t start smoothly in their opening match. Unexpectedly, Inter Milan found themselves trailing in the 25th minute of the first half, when Oliver Torres delivered a corner kick from the right that met the head of Ramos, who—just as he often did during his Real Madrid days—rose above the defenders and scored the opener with a pinpoint header.
That goal seemed to wake up Cristian Chivu’s team, who from that moment began to control possession and take command of the match. In the 42nd minute, Kristjan Asllani took a free kick that found Matteo Darmian inside the box; the defender set up Martinez, who leveled the score at 1–1 with a delicate touch.
What happened in the other Group E match?
Before the clash between Inter Milan and Monterrey, Group E action kicked off at Lumen Field in Seattle, where River Plate defeated Urawa Red Diamonds 3–1. Facundo Colidio, Sebastian Driussi, and Maximiliano Meza scored for the Argentine side, while Yusuke Matsuo converted from the spot for the Japanese club.
