<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/shaquille-oneal">Shaquille O’Neal</a> recently reignited his criticism of Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert, labeling him “the worst player in the NBA.” The comments stirred debate across the league, with some players rallying to support Gobert—including one of LeBron James‘ former Los Angeles Lakers teammates.



In an interview with Complex, Shaq didn’t hold back when asked who he thought was the worst player in NBA history. Without hesitation, he named Rudy Gobert. “If you sign a contract for $250 million, show me $250 million,” O’Neal said. “I played for about $120 million. Guys like [Gobert] are messing up the system. They’re making all this money and can’t f— play.”



On the latest episode of The Pat Bev Podcast with Rone, former Lakers guard <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/patrick-beverley">Patrick Beverley</a> came to Gobert’s defense, stating that the French center is far from the worst player in the league. “Rudy’s not the worst player in the NBA. I think he’s changed the game defensively when you talk about rim protection—statistically and historically.”



“In Rudy’s eyes, and in his team’s eyes, he’s the best defensive player in the world—and that’s the truth,” Beverley added. “When it comes to rim protection and shot-blocking, he’s historically one of the greats.”

Co-host Rone asked Beverley why he thought Shaq made such harsh comments about Gobert, and Beverley offered some insight into O’Neal’s tendency to be tough on fellow centers. “We’re talking about Superman—one of the most dominant players to ever play the game,” Beverley explained. “Shaq probably thinks if he were Gobert’s size, he’d be doing what he did, and more.”







“Not everyone is Shaq. He had the same issues with Dwight Howard. At that time, Dwight was the best big man in the league. I just think Shaq is a tough critic when it comes to guys who play his position.”

This isn’t the first time Shaq has taken shots at Gobert. Earlier this year, on his podcast “The Big Podcast with Shaq,” the Hall of Famer claimed that even at 52 years old, he could put up similar numbers to Gobert. “Twelve points and eight rebounds? I could do that s— right now,” O’Neal boasted back in March.

Rudy Gobert was unexpectedly removed from the starting lineup of Team France for their Olympic men’s basketball quarterfinal against Team Canada. French national team coach Vincent Collet explained that Gobert was dealing with a finger injury and that the lineup adjustment was made specifically for this game. 



Following the game, which France won 82–73, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/golden-state-warriors" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Golden State Warriors</a> forward Draymond Green expressed his surprise at Gobert’s limited playing time. Green criticized the decision, noting that it is unusual for an NBA player, particularly one not representing Team USA, to be benched during a crucial Olympic game on his The Draymond Green Show.

To make it even more impressive, they blew the defending<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/nba" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> NBA</a> champions out despite not having their best defender. <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/rudy-gobert" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rudy Gobert</a> missed the game to be there for the birth of his first child.



Needleess to say, that decision was more than valid, yet it still came with some criticism. That includes Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green, who respectfully disagreed with his decision.



<h2>Draymond Green Didn’t Agree With Rudy Gobert</h2>



“I was a little skeptical [of the Timberwolves] starting the game off because Rudy was going to miss the game,” Green said on his podcast. “I just felt like, I’m a father of four, I love my kids and I love my wife, but she’s going to have to hold off for me just a few more hours for a playoff game. Me, personally.”

Green still sent Gobert his best wishes and understood where he was coming from. Still, he believes the players shouldn’t take this kind of game for granted, either:



“But number one, congratulations to him. Anytime we bring new life into this world, it’s a special thing. And that’s something like I said, as a father of four, that I don’t take for granted at all. But I also try to not take this game for granted,” Green continued.



<h2>Green Questioned Gobert’s Actions</h2>



Green thinks the reigning Defensive Player of the Year may have been overly confident with his actions, questioning if he would’ve made the same call if his team had been down in the series:



“So when I heard Rudy wasn’t going to play, I was like, ‘Wow,’ ” Green said. “To me, it almost felt as if you were almost cashing it in, like, ‘We won Game 1,’ because my first immediate question was if they lost Game 1, would the approach be the same? If you lost Game 1 and you’re in jeopardy of going down 0-2, would it be the same or would you be there?”

At the end of the day, Gobert is a human being first and foremost, and he has every right to be there for the birth of his child. No one should criticize him for something like this, and it was simply bigger than basketball.
