“We were pretty tied in on both edges there. And so, you know, those are downhill runs we’re looking to really get physical and push guys around. But I do think that we were getting movement out there. It was not a high scoring game. I think we had four possessions in the first half. When it’s time to spread everybody out and air it out, we’ll do that and create more space. But this is a team that has great team speed, great team speed, and so we took that into consideration, putting the game plan together. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but it’s a start.”

He also said: “So that was an important thing during the process (for) both Lincoln and Julian. You know, I used to say during bed check, make sure you watch how Will Howard’s going about his business, because that’s going to be you guys next year. So he’s learned a lot from there.

The Buckeyes saw four defensive-linemen get drafted in the 2025 NFL Draft, further opening the scenario for Houston to become a starter. The draftees include: Tyleik Williams (28th overall to the Detroit Lions), JT Tuimoloau (45th overall to the Indianapolis Colts), Jack Sawyer (123rd overall to the Pittsburgh Steelers), and Ty Hamilton (148th overall to the Los Angeles Rams).

“[Smith is] very, very competitive and he’s not used to losing,” Day admitted, per On3. “We lost the first game against Oregon and he was angry. He wasn’t the only one and certainly for him he expects to win every single game. He expects to win every drill he’s in. That’s just the way he’s wired.

“So, when you ask a question, you’re going to get a genuine response from Jeremiah. And I think the guys feed off of that, and when he tells you something you believe it. There’s no reading between the lines with him. He may not be a man of many words, but when he talks you listen and we’re all listening. He’s the ultimate competitor.”



<h2>Smith’s message</h2>



After putting on a freshman season for the ages, Smith is determined to take his game to another level—if that’s even possible. One of his biggest goals is to get revenge on the Wolverines, whose win over the Buckeyes left a stain on their <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-football">college football</a> championship run.



“I’m not a sore loser, but I hate losing, and losing to that team up north was pretty crazy,” Smith told The Athletic. “In the end, I think it really helped us play the way we did in the playoffs. But I didn’t want to go to Ohio State and lose to that team up north. I just hate them. Just something about them. For the next two years, I promise you, I will not lose to them. I can’t lose to them in the next two years.”

<h2>End the skid</h2>



There’s much more to Smith’s statement than meets the eye. The Buckeyes are currently dragging a four-game losing streak against the Wolverines. Several elite talents have come through Columbus without experiencing a win in The Game. The 19-year-old wide receiver is determined not to be on that list.

Sustaining last season’s success in College Football is no easy feat, especially for the Ohio State Buckeyes, who managed to win the National Championship. Ryan Day knows they will be the target of several competitors, including the Texas Longhorns led by <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/arch-manning">Arch Manning</a>, another strong contender for the title.


 


As of today, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/steve-sarkisian">Steve Sarkisian</a> boasts one of the top prospects in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-football">NCAAF</a> at this position, following the announced departure of Quinn Ewers to the NFL. Soon, the Longhorns will have to visit the reigning champions, and Day is already anticipating this crucial matchup.



During a recent press conference at the Big Ten Media Days event, the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ohio-state-buckeyes">Buckeyes</a>’ HC acknowledged the talent of their rivals, even considering Manning as one of the top quarterbacks for this season.



“[Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian]’s got a great team and he’s a great coach,” <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ryan-day">Day</a> said. “Arch is just a tremendous talent. One of the best young guys to come through college football in a long time. He’s gonna be very, very good and likely one of the best quarterbacks in the country this year.

“So we know what the challenge is going to be week one and we’re working towards that. We’re fired up about having this monster game in week one and it’s really got our attention in a big way. I’m excited that we’re at home for it.”

<h2>The QB battle at Ohio State</h2>



Just like in Texas with Ewers’ departure to the NFL, the Ohio State Buckeyes weren’t exempt from such moves, and it was Will Howard who ultimately became the newest member of the Pittsburgh Steelers.



As a result, a new era begins in the QB room for the program, though coach Ryan Day has yet to definitively name his new leader on the field.



“Same, because it’s hard to make any progress unless you’re actually on the field playing football,” Day said of where the battle stands. “But I think both guys have gotten stronger. Will be interesting to see once we get done with our summer program with Mick [Marotti] next week … who’s Iron Buckeyes? That’ll be big for the leadership.


 


“But guys have taken leadership roles. They’ve been throwing with the wide receivers. I ask those guys all the time, and they like both of them. We’re going to put them in as many competitive situation as we possibly can to figure out who handles that the best because we’ve got to be on point Week 1. We can’t be messing around. I know that we’ll need all of those guys in that room this year.”

Winning a national championship in <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-football">college football</a> is never easy — but doing it back-to-back is an even greater challenge. Ryan Day will once again captain the ship for the Ohio State Buckeyes, but with Will Howard no longer the central figure on the field, the spotlight now shifts to one key question: Who will be the starting quarterback come Week 1?



The first signs of movement began to emerge following the Spring Game, and head coach <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ryan-day">Ryan Day</a> is slowly starting to zero in on two potential candidates to take over as the Buckeyes’ starting quarterback: Julian Sayin and Lincoln Kienholz.



“I felt like Lincoln (Kienholz) settled down after the first drive or so and made some nice throws,” Day said. “But I thought Julian (Sayin) for the most part early on was in rhythm and moved the team down the field for a couple touchdowns, which was good. Made some nice throws. There’s certainly a lot to grow from and this is why we did this. You can see it was a fairly significant emphasis on throwing the ball to see how the quarterbacks were going to respond.



“We’ll use this as another evaluation tool because right from the jump from when we got off the bus to when we just finished there, I’m glad we did this. I’m glad we did the spring game. I wasn’t sure, but it was definitely the right thing to do.”

During the Spring Game debut, Julian Sayin impressed by connecting on 17 of 24 passes for 175 yards, leading the Buckeyes to three consecutive touchdown drives to open the game. On the other side, Lincoln Kienholz also made his mark, completing 12 of 18 passes for 158 yards and adding two touchdown throws.

<h2>Progressing with every game</h2>



While Ryan Day is still far from naming a starting quarterback, the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ohio-state-buckeyes">Ohio State</a> head coach told the media he’s pleased with what he’s seen from his players so far. He expressed confidence that, with time, the team will continue to take meaningful steps forward — even if they come one small stride at a time.



“I think it’s just a matter of playing the game,” Day said. “And that’s why I think we’ve talked about this this spring. As the spring has gone on, I’ve just realized that at all positions, but most importantly at quarterback, we have to continue to play 11-on-11 football.



“And you can see the growth. You saw some growth even in the short amount of time that you guys were able to watch some of the practice this spring. We have the ability to watch them on a daily basis, see them grow.”



<h2>Will Howard sees plenty of talent in the Buckeyes’ QB room</h2>



Recent history at Ohio State has one name etched into Buckeyes lore following the team’s National Championship victory earlier this year: Will Howard. The talented quarterback is on a clear path to the NFL, but for now, he’s a voice of authority when it comes to evaluating the current quarterback situation under Ryan Day.



“I’m excited for them. They’ve got a lot of potential, a lot of young guys with a lot of talent,” Howard said to the press. “And you know, those guys are all made up the right qualities. They got the right makeup, they want to be here. And it takes, it takes something to be an Ohio State quarterback, and takes a special, different kind of dude, and all these guys got it.”
