The Detroit Red Wings travelled to the nation’s capital, to take on the Washington Capitals, but they were unable to clear the bar in a pivotal test. <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/todd-mclellan">Todd McLellan</a> and his team discovered they are still well behind NHL powerhouses like the Caps, as they suffered a very harsh defeat at Capital One Arena.



The <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/detroit-red-wings">Red Wings</a> managed to keep up with the Capitals’ pace for 40 minutes, but Washington ultimately blew the doors off Detroit in the third period. The Caps scored three goals in the final frame, sending the Wings back home with a crucial loss amid their playoff push.



Detroit entered the matchup with high expectations, hoping to build on their recent 3-0 win over the Vegas Golden Knights, yet they dropped the ball, squandering a golden opportunity to pull within one point of the wildcard spots in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> standings.



Words are wind, and after the lackluster performance, McLellan delivered a firm message to the locker room. “That has to get fixed” McLellan said, via The Detroit News. “That’s the only way we’re going to improve as a hockey club, rebound from things that don’t go our way and to have that happen is disappointing. That implosion didn’t make any sense to me.

“This one, so they scored the second (goal), what are we going to do? It was a sneaky shot, fortunate, we’re still OK. So give your teammates a chance to use the six minutes to pull the goaltender and we’re going to overtime at 2-2 or losing 3-1. We look up with three minutes left and it’s 4-1. That can’t happen.“



<h2>Common sight</h2>



Red Wings key defenseman Ben Chiarot expressed his concerns about the team’s dull third period, stating it’s become a recurring theme throughout the 2024-25 NHL campaign.



“It’s frustrating, it’s been kind of happening too often where we put together a good 40 or so minutes together and have things come unraveled on us,” Ben Chiarot stated. “Guys have to learn from it and get better at it.“

<h2>Trending upwards, but it’s not enough</h2>



“We were way better this game than we were days ago,” McLellan added. “You still have to check for your chances, you can’t open it up and pout and get lazy. Perhaps we did that and maybe that’s the lesson we’re learning.”



There are no moral victories this late in the NHL season, especially with the Stanley Cup Playoffs approaching and Detroit eager to play their first postseason game in over eight seasons. McLellan and the Red Wings must right the ship and will have a chance to do so when visiting the Golden Knights on March 22.

The Detroit Red Wings are looking to build a winning streak amid their playoff push in the 2024-25 NHL season. The <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/detroit-red-wings">Red Wings</a> face a big challenge, but one they are eager to take on—especially if they’re serious about ending their eight-season Stanley Cup Playoffs drought. Detroit’s matchup with Washington will have a playoff-like feel to it, serving as an early test for McLellan to assess what needs improvement within his team.



It’s impossible to talk about the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/washington-capitals">Capitals</a> without addressing Ovechkin’s late-season run and his pursuit of the league’s all-time goals record. McLellan issued a strong message about the Russian goal machine in Washington, reminding his players not to lose sight of him—though it’s much easier said than done.

“Their team and their power play evolution has also allowed him to roam around a little bit. He’s not always just in that spot. When somebody takes him away. He and [John] Carlson are prepared to rotate and move around.”

Going into matchups with the Capitals, few dare speak up against Ovechkin, fearing they might summon a beast capable of dismantling any gameplan and scoring in bunches.



<h2>McLellan makes honest admission about Ovi’s record-chase</h2>



Ovechkin is only eight goals away from surpassing Wayne Gretzky as the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a>‘s all-time leading goalscorer. It’s highly improbable that the Capitals’ captain won’t own the record, either by this season’s end, or next season. However, it did seem like a longshot some time ago, and even on the eve of this campaign, when the 39-year-old was 41 goals behind Gretzky’s 894 tallies.



“No, I didn’t think it would be broken,” McLellan stated about the NHL goals record. “I hope he’s not going to break it [against us tonight]. That would be ugly,”

Fortunately for McLellan, no player has ever scored eight goals in an NHL game—not even Gretzky or Ovechkin. Joe Malone holds the record for most goals in a game, after scoring seven times during the Quebec Bulldogs’ 10-6 victory over the Toronto St. Patricks on January 31st, 1920.

The star forward in Mo-Town has stepped up his performance recently, despite having to face the odds time and again.

“I just think that [Kane] loves playing hockey still,” Red Wings coach Todd McLellan said, via NHL.com. “He comes and he wants to play, and he wants the puck and he wants it to make plays.

“Does it always go perfect? No. But he can’t wait to get back on the ice again, and that excitement to play remains there in a player that could just say, ‘I’m full. I’ve got my Cups. <h2>McLellan reflects on shutout win over Vegas</h2>



With their win at home against the Golden Knights, the Red Wings have now cut within two points of the New York Rangers, who currently hold the second wild card berth in the Eastern Conference. However, this triumph by itself won’t mean much for Detroit if they are unable to build on it and find consistency. 



The Red Wings haven’t won two or more games in a row since February 25, when they defeated Minessota after taking down Anaheim the game before. Perhaps this convincing victory is what McLellan’s team needed to gain confidence.



“At the end of the night, the scoreboard was a really good thing for our team,” Todd McLellan said. “It was a good night for a lot of our players, which should give us some confidence.”

Up next, Detroit will make the trip to the nation’s capital city, where they’ll take on the Washington Capitals. Not only will the Red Wings go head-to-head with the best team in the conference, they will face Alex Ovechkin, amidst a historic chase for the NHL all-time goals record.

“If not, I’m very close [to being at 100%],” Kane stated postgame after being asked by New York Rangers legend Henrik Lundqvist. “Body feels really good. I think after the surgery, you know, I felt good last year, but I still didn’t feel like my hip was my own, if that makes any sense. And now it just kind of feels like it’s a part of me, it belongs to me. It’s been nice to be playing without pain the last couple of years. Feeling good, feeling a lot better.”

“I was up there, it was against Benson, I thought that might be the one for me,” Kane said, via NHL on TNT. “And the next [scuffle] I was with Owen Power, so I mean, I don’t know if it’s a good idea to go against a guy that’s 6’5”. But, you never know when those come, I guess. If it happened it happened, but no, never had one [Gordie Howe hat trick], so tonight would have been the night.”

The Hurricanes dominated possession late in the second period, forcing Detroit’s defenders Albert Johansson and Simon Edvinsson into an extended shift, but Lyon stood tall to keep Carolina from widening the gap.

Carolina struck first late in the opening period when Jalen Chatfield forced a turnover from Moritz Seider in the defensive zone, setting up Martinook at the top of the circle for a backhand shot that beat Lyon. Staal doubled the lead early in the second period.



Söderblom cut the deficit to 2-1 early in the third, giving the Red Wings a glimmer of hope. Lyon kept the game within reach by denying Taylor Hall on a penalty shot. In the final moments, Lucas Raymond took a hit from Staal and left the ice under his own power after being attended to by the team’s medical staff. “I think he’s OK,” McLellan said. “He took a forearm, I think, up to the jaw area, but I think he’s fine.”



<h2>Red Wings’ key shortcomings</h2>



One of Detroit’s biggest struggles in the loss was their inefficiency in faceoffs, winning just 19 of 48 (40%). McLellan pointed to this as a crucial factor, noting that the team has maintained a 50.5% success rate this <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> season.

Just what the doctor ordered for Todd McLellan’s side as they fight to stay alive in the hunt for the playoffs in the NHL’s Eastern Conference.



Three games at Little Caesars Arena, three victories for the Red Wings. They say home is where the heart is, and Detroit proved just how much heart they have when playing in front of their fans.



Detroit flipped the switch after a disappointing road trip in which the Wings were clipped in three of their four games. Upon their return to Motor City, the Red Wings’ engine roared to life, now McLellan’s team is just two points away from a wildcard berth.



The Yzerplan seems to finally be paying off, though much credit must be given to McLellan. Since being hired as head coach midway through the campaign, he canged the entire tune of the 2024-25 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> season for the Red Wings. The players are confident again, and against the Kings it was Raymond who stole the show.

<h2>Raymond reigns supreme</h2>



Detroit’s 4th overall selection during the 2020 NHL entry Draft, Lucas Raymond, has been putting up incredible performances during his fourth season in the league. 



Following a sensational four-point performance in the 5-2 win over the Kings, Raymond now has 56 points on the season (20 goals, 36 assists). He leads the Red Wings in both assists and points, and is just one goal shy of the team lead in scoring.



<h2>Good signs for the future</h2>



The Red Wings are desperate to snap their postseason drought which has extended into eight seasons. However, if they ultimately fell short this year, fans in Mo-town may find relief knowing the future is only looking brighter.
