Cam Newton tests positive for Covid-19, game vs. Chiefs likely to be played on Monday

Well, it finally happened. The NFL season could be in jeopardy as New England Patriots starting quarterback Cam Newton just tested positive for Covid-19 and is set to miss – at least – Sunday’s game vs. the Kansas City Chiefs.

This is the first NFL superstar who contracts the virus after several players and staff members of the Tennessee Titans also confirmed an outbreak, which even forced the league to postpone their Week 4 game vs. the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Patriots still traveled to Kansas City to facePatrick Mahomes and the Chiefs after delaying their flight while they awaited for more test results. Luckily, there were no more positive cases. Now, the game is likely to be played on Monday night.

“Patriots’ QB Cam Newton tested positive and is out for Sunday’s game vs. Kansas City.Patriots have been doing mass testing and re-testing and, so far, there is no spread, per source.Patriots were scheduled to leave for KC at about 1 ET; trip now is on standby as they await more test results and guidance from the NFL,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter said on a series of tweets.

“We are in close consultation with the NFL, as well as our team of independent doctors and specialists, and will follow their guidance regarding our scheduled trip to Kansas City and game against the Chiefs. The health and safety of our team, as well as our opponent, are of highest priority,” the Patriots said on a statement.

Is The NFL Season In Jeopardy?

We’re just 4 weeks into the 2020 NFL season and there have already been multiple positive tests for Covid-19, including a high-profile player and starting quarterback. This doesn’t look good. At all.

The NBA had to put their season in a 4-month hiatus before coming up with the ‘bubble’ plan in Orlando. Several MLB teams had to reschedule multiple games and play countless double-headers following a couple of outbreaks.

Needless to say, playing a football double-header is out of the question, and so is rescheduling. The players aren’t likely to stay silent and we could see multiple opt-outs and even a shutdown.
