Mitch Marner is one of the main storylines of the NHL offseason, with his future still uncertain as his six-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs is about to come to an end. Among the potential destinations for him are the Vegas Golden Knights.

Speculation suggests that Marner is ready to test the market as he becomes a free agent on July 1. After contributing 102 points last season, it’s no surprise that many franchises have expressed strong interest in acquiring him.

At first glance, it might seem like Marner has full control over his next move. However, the Maple Leafs also have a parallel plan, driven by the need to gain value from the departure of one of their stars. In recent days, behind the scenes and without much buzz, they may have prepared a surprising move with Vegas.

Maple Leafs ready for a trade

According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman on the 32 Thoughts podcast, “on-and-off this week, Toronto and Vegas have been discussing the possibility of a sign-and-trade involving Mitch Marner.” Although its viability remains uncertain, discussions have already taken place and are still ongoing.

As part of this potential, surprising deal, Friedman also reported what Toronto would receive in return. “I believe Nic Roy will be going to Toronto if this gets done,” he stated. This situation would mark an unexpected twist, especially since everything indicated Marner would simply test free agency.

Vegas eyed a backup plan

The Golden Knights are clearly the franchise making the strongest push to land Marner for the 2025–26 NHL season. In that context, they are also exploring a backup plan in case they fail to bring the Maple Leafs forward to Paradise. “Vegas also made an attempt to trade for Rasmus Andersson this week. But could not get it done,” Friedman also reported.
