Aaron Boone once again witnessed a “difficult” play from Anthony Volpe, but this time it wasn’t an error. It was a quick decision that was not well-received, leading many to mercilessly criticize the Yankees shortstop during and after the game against the Boston Red Sox.
It was a very quick play: a groundball from Rafaela to Volpe. He fielded it and threw to second base, where the runner wasn’t even halfway to third. This all happened with no outs in the top of the 9th inning, with the Yankees losing 1-0.
Boone tried to justify Volpe’s play, saying, “It’s obviously not the right play, but it’s a little bit of a heady play too. He almost caught a guy off in scoring position there and then he doesn’t come around to score anyway.”
Boone Defends Volpe’s Decision
Boone strongly defended Volpe, arguing that while a throw to first base would have been better, it wasn’t necessary to overanalyze the play. He also commented on how Jazz Chisholm could have helped more with the throw to first.
“He makes a really good play on the contact play. I mean, are we going to really dive into that one a lot? I mean, I get it. It was an out and but it’s kind of a heads up almost got a guy napping. And really, if Duran doesn’t affect the throw where he’s getting back, Jazz still might complete the play. Not the right play, probably, but in some ways, the heads up play too.”
Predictably, people were harsh on Volpe on social media, with all kinds of posts. Some were even calling for him to be removed from the shortstop position for the next game against the Red Sox.
