The tension surrounding Alex Bregman’s status in Boston continues to mount as the trade deadline approaches, and now his agent is weighing in. After the Red Sox dealt Rafael Devers, questions around Bregman’s long-term role within the franchise have only intensified.

Boston, currently sitting at 40-41, remains within striking distance of postseason contention but has struggled to find consistency. Despite Bregman’s limited availability due to a quad injury, the veteran third baseman has delivered All-Star-level production when healthy in 2025. That makes the uncertainty surrounding his status all the more relevant as July looms.

Amid trade speculation and contract questions, Scott Boras, Bregman’s agent, offered a candid perspective this week. In a statement to The Boston Globe, Boras clarified where his client stands and hinted at potential openness to negotiating an extension.

Boras’ message

“I always tell the team — and Alex directs me to tell them we’re always open to any conversation, Boras said. “Any player who plays well somewhere, it’s something that’s important for the team and important for the player. It’s an additive. I think everybody is focused on the season. But the issue is, if you have a player playing at a high level where he’s at, that’s important for the team to look at and important for the player to look at.”

Bregman is playing under a three-year deal he signed this past offseason, but it includes a player opt-out clause after the current season. At 31 years old, he remains a valuable asset — both to the Red Sox and to potential contenders looking for veteran infield help.

The recent Devers trade brought scrutiny to Boston’s long-term roster direction. Bregman’s presence at third base, following Devers’ departure, was expected to stabilize the infield. However, flipping Bregman just months later could send a conflicting message to the fanbase.

What trading Bregman would mean for Boston

From a pure baseball standpoint, moving Bregman could net a significant return. The Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees, for example, are both in need of reliable infield bats, and Bregman’s playoff pedigree — including two World Series titles — would be highly sought after. His ability to impact games on both sides of the ball remains unquestioned.

Still, the optics of another high-profile trade involving the third base position might be damaging for Boston. The saga involving Devers was emotionally taxing for both the player and fans. Trading Bregman so soon after could further complicate the team’s public image and raise doubts about management’s consistency.

On the flip side, the Red Sox have a promising core of young players they are eager to feature more prominently. That, combined with Bregman’s contract flexibility and trade value, creates a difficult — but potentially defining — decision for Boston’s front office.
