Devin Williams offers short reply to Yankees fans’ ‘We Want Weaver’ chants

A recent New York Yankees game turned into a disaster for Devin Williams, and one of the most telling moments came when fans in the stands chanted for Luke Weaver, who hasn’t been filling the closer role as expected.

Devin Williams found himself in trouble once again during a recent New York Yankees tight game—only this time, the loss wasn’t the worst part. From the stands, painful chants broke out as fans loudly called for Luke Weaver, the Bombers’ usual star closer.

Asked specifically about the “We Want Weaver” chants, Williams kept his response short and direct: “Everyone has their opinions.” That’s what he told Yankees reporter Gary Phillips. Williams added another blunt comment: “Nothing’s working right now.”

The Yankees’ latest defeat came at the hands of the Blue Jays. Williams entered the game in the top of the ninth inning with the Yankees holding a slim 2-1 lead. However, he quickly allowed the Blue Jays to rally and take a 3-2 lead. He was eventually pulled for Leiter Jr., who also struggled and allowed another run.

Devin Williams admits his struggles

Williams isn’t blind to his problems. He recently admitted that he’s been fighting through rough outings most of this MLB season. “It’s something I’ve been battling for most of the season, so it’s getting pretty frustrating.” Through 10 appearances so far, Williams has posted a brutal 11.25 ERA.

Still, the Yankees reliever said he’s sticking to a simple plan this season: keep working and show up every day. “The only thing you can do is keep working, continue to show up every day, and give it everything I’ve got,” Williams told Gary Phillips for the New York Daily News.

Aaron Boone remains patient with Williams

Yankees manager Aaron Boone understands the bullpen needs help, but he continues to express confidence that Williams can bounce back and become a valuable piece for the team again.

“We’ll kind of talk through that stuff,” Boone said about possibly easing Williams into smaller pitching situations. “This is raw right now. We want to do everything we can to get him right because we know how good he is and how valuable he’s going to be for us.”
